Police Blotter: Man arrested in robbery of Hillside Avenue bank

Officers from the 107th Precinct arrested Gary Kelly, 36, of 244-21 130th Ave. in Laurelton after he was identified as the robber, said Det. Carolyn Chew, a Police Department spokeswoman.

She said there were no injuries.

Jamaica handyman draws 18 years for raping 82-year-old

JAMAICA – A handyman man from Jamaica was sentenced Tuesday to 18 years in prison for raping an 82-year-old woman, the Queens district attorney's office said.

Byron Shelton, 46, of Jamaica was found guilty of attacking the woman, who is confined to a wheelchair and suffers from Parkinson's disease, inside her apartment.

State Supreme Court Justice Richard Buchter in Kew Gardens sentenced Shelton, who maintained his innocence during the jury trial, claiming the sex was consensual in the April 1999 incident.

The elderly woman, who was described as the oldest rape victim in Queens to testify at a trial, took the stand and named Shelton as her attacker.

Man arrested in stabbing of mother's friend in Ridgewood

RIDGEWOOD – A 19-year-old man was in custody Tuesday night for allegedly stabbing his mother's girlfriend to death after a dispute turned violent, said police.

Luis Perez, of 63-46 Forest Ave. in Ridgewood was arrested Tuesday at 2:07 p.m. after he allegedly called police and said, “I've stabbed my mother's girlfriend,” said Police Officer Joseph Cavitolo, a Police Department spokesman.

Juanita Hernandez, 43, whose address was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene, Cavitolo said.

Hernandez was stabbed four times in the chest with a kitchen knife that was recovered at the scene, he said.

Charges against Perez were pending, Cavitolo said.

$420K in jewelry stolen from Roosevelt Ave. shop

WOODSIDE – About $420,000 in assorted jewelry was stolen from Safer Electronic and Jewelry, police said.

The burglar or burglars entered the store at 67-02 Roosevelt Ave. at about 3:45 a.m. Monday through a basement door by breaking the lock, and then destroyed a video camera, said Det. Madelyne Galindo, a Police Department spokeswoman.

There were no arrests by presstime. Police were investigating, Galindo said.

Teen robbed at knifepoint at Forest Hills intersection

FOREST HILLS – A 15-year-old boy was robbed at the intersection of Burns and Puritan avenues about 7:15 p.m. Monday, said Officer David Valovage of the 112th Precinct.

The teen was approached by five or six males in dark clothing wielding a knife, Valovage said.

The victim could not identify the robbers, who stole $6 in cash and the boy's Walkman, Valovage said.

Police were investigating.

Man robs Sunnyside bank by passing note to teller

SUNNYSIDE – A man robbed the Dime Savings Bank at 42-25 Queens Blvd. Saturday, police said.

At about 11:20 a.m. the man entered the bank and handed the teller a note demanding money, said Officer Guy Braun, a Police Department spokesman. Braun said the teller complied and the man fled northbound on 42nd Avenue with $5,000.

Police were investigating.

Man shot in left foot near Astoria Blvd.

ASTORIA – A 21-year-old man was shot in the left foot as he was walking down 18th Street near Astoria Boulevard, police said.

He was shot by an unidentified man Monday at about 11:40 a.m., said Det. Madelyne Galindo, a Police Department spokeswoman. She said he was taken to Elmhurst Hospital and was in stable condition.

Police were investigating, she said.

Cash stolen, note left at 28th Avenue site

ASTORIA – Someone broke into 23-13 28th Ave. location on Saturday at about 11:30 a.m., police said.

The person stole $450 and left a note containing racial remarks, said Det. Nancy Yule, a Police Department spokeswoman.

Police were investigating.

Boy found unconscious after Ditmars apt. fire

DITMARS – A 3-year-old boy was taken to Elmhurst Hospital after a fire in his family's upstairs apartment at 36-01 Ditmars Blvd. Friday at 11:25 a.m., police said.

When firefighters and 114th Precinct officers responded to the 911 call, they found the boy unconscious, said Officer Guy Braun, a Police Department spokesman.

He said fire officials determined it was an accidental fire.

Con Ed truck leaks coolant in Elmhurst

ELMHURST – A Con Edison truck leaked 100 gallons of oil coolant onto the street at 55th Avenue between 98th and 99th streets at 6 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

The police notified the city Department of Environmental Protection and the Office of Emergency Management, said Carmen Melendez, a police spokesman.

FOREST HILLS – A 15-year-old was robbed at the intersection of Burns and Puritan avenues Monday at 7:15 p.m., said Officer David Valovage of the 112th Precinct.

The youth was approached by five or six males wielded a knife and wearing dark clothing, the officer said. The victim could not identify the perpetrators who stole $6 in cash and the youth's Walkman, Valovage said.

Police were investigating the crime.

City offers $500K for illegal handguns

MANHATTAN – The mayor's office has announced a program to retreive illegal handguns.

The Gun Stop program offers $500 for information leading to the arrest of anyone possessing an illegal handgun. Individuals who know someone carrying, selling or using a handgun illegally can call (866) GUN-STOP (486-7867) anonymously, said Detective Carolyn Chew, a police spokeswoman.
