Police Blotter: Some patients evacuated in Flushing Hospital fire

A spokesman for the department, Jerard Allas, said it took nearly 25 fire companies and 106 firefighters nearly 1 1/2 hours to extinguish the blaze. The fire, which broke out in the ductwork in the basement of the hospital at 45-00 Parsons Blvd., was reported to the Fire Department around 11:29 a.m., Allas said.

Because of heavy smoke, some of the patients in the east wing were transferred to the west wing, the Fire Department said. There were no injuries reported, the Fire Department said Wednesday.

Queens judge denies bail for ODB rapper

KEW GARDENS – Troubled rap star Russell Jones, known to his fans as “Old Dirty Bastard” or ODB, was denied bail Tuesday on 1999 drug and motor vehicle charges, a published report said.

Jones, 30, was brought back to Queens from Philadelphia last week to face charges for allegedly running a red light in July at 228th Street and Linden Boulevard in Cambria Heights with six suspensions on his license. Authorities said he was in possession of cocaine and marijuana.

In an effort to keep Jones off the streets, State Supreme Court Justice Joseph Grosso sent the rapper, whose next court date is scheduled for Feb. 9, back to jail, Newsday reported.

Jones has at least three other cases pending against him, including charges of attacking a woman at the Jade East Motel near Kennedy Airport in January last year, the newspaper said.

Boys strike man with shovel in anti-gay attack in Astoria

ASTORIA – Three boys made anti-gay remarks to a man at the corner of 31st Street and Hoyt Ave. at 9:40 p.m. Sunday, police said. One of them then took a shovel and struck the man on the head; the man grabbed the shovel and struck the boy in return, police said.

The 28-year-old man was charged with assault, and taken to Astoria General Hospital where he was listed in stable condition. Two of the boys, 13 and 14, were charged with third-degree assault. The 13-year-old was taken to Elmhurst Hospital where he was listed in stable condition, said Officer Lee Ann Tracy, a police spokeswoman.

The third boy, whose age was not released, was not charged.

Cartons of cigarettes stolen from Springfield Blvd. store

OAKLAND GARDENS – Sixty cartons of cigarettes were stolen in a burglary of a store at 69-21 Springfield Blvd. in Oakland Gardens, reported at 5:20 a.m. Sunday, said Detective Theresa Farello, a police spokeswoman.

An investigation was continuing, she said.

Wreath on Queens Blvd. church burned in vandalism

FOREST HILLS – A wreath was burned on the facade of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church at 110-06 Queens Blvd. about 7:30 a.m. Monday, police said.

The vandal or vandals set the wreath on fire, then fled the scene, police said.

Fire and police personnel were investigating.

Jewelry taken in burglary at Long Island City store

LONG ISLAND CITY – A burglar or burglars forced open a door at Select Jewelry at 37-2 48th Ave. at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday and broke into the store's safe, stealing $35,000 worth of jewelry, said Officer George Jenson, a police spokesman.

An investigation was continuing, he said.

14-year-old boy hit by car on Roosevelt Avenue

WOODSIDE- A 14-year old boy was hit by a car last Thursday afternoon while crossing Roosevelt Avenue near 68th Street, police said.

The boy was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in extremely critical condition, said Officer Guy Braun, a police spokesman.

38-year-old missing from Breezy Point

BREEZY POINT – Christopher O'Brien, 38, of Beach 213th St. was reported missing by his sister last Sunday, and remained missing by presstime.

He is 6 feet, 1 inch tall, weighs 210 pounds, and has blue eyes, sandy hair, and a scar on his left cheek. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a green sweatshirt. He is in poor mental health, said Detective Theresa Farello, a police spokeswoman.

New Jersey man's body found at Ditmars station

ASTORIA – A man's body was found with a head wound on the N line at Ditmars station Tuesday at 11:30 p.m., police said.

The man in his 30s was lying on the platform and was taken to Elmhurst General Hospital where he was pronounced dead, said Detective Theresa Farello, a police spokeswoman.

The man was identified as Michael Diprazza, a New Jersey resident, Farello said.

He did not appear to be the victim of a crime, but police were investigating, she said.

37-year-old man stabbed in Astoria

ASTORIA – A man, 37, was stabbed numerous times in the torso at 12th Street and 40th Avenue Wednesday at 1:13 a.m. by a man who fled the scene, said Detective Theresa Farello, a police spokeswoman.

The victim was taken to Elmhurst General Hospital where he was listed in very critical condition, she said. The investigation was ongoing, Farello said.
