York College, at 94-20 Guy Brewer Blvd., paid tribute to the slain civil rights leader's spirit Monday afternoon, which would have been his 72nd birthday, and celebrated the multifaceted history of blacks in Queens.
“I think this event is phenomenal,” said Drakeford, a Laurelton resident whose mother's paintings are in the show.
“The artwork shows the artistic talent of the community in a lot of different works. There are paintings, quilts, sculptures and photos, which help to educate people about African-American history and other types of history.”
The program, which included artwork, memorabilia, poetry readings and choirs, was the second annual kickoff event honoring King, Black History Month and Women's History Month. It was sponsored by the York College Commemorative Quilt Community.
Some of the works in the show use traditional African design to trace African-American history, there were traditional African masks and photographs of some recent events – the Million Man March, for example
