The National Arts League, located in the heart of Douglaston on Douglaston Parkway just off Northern Boulevard, created to encourages artists and sculptors from Queens and Long Island in their craft, held its Spring Students' Show Saturday.
A committee of judges awarded two best-in-show prizes of $25 each to Don Huber for his entry, “Brookville Nursery,” and to Addie Jahelka for her mixed medium “Celebration.”
“Brookville Nursery” was a riot of color, depicting the varieties of flowers grown at the nursery on Long Island. “Celebration” was a presentation of good jazz.
Among the merit winners in the show – which included watercolors, oils, sculpture, and mixed medium – were Ellie Binder, Emie Costa and Ann Zuckerman.
Also on display were “Still Life Jug” by Irene Helm of Bayside, and “Cabbage to Go” by Marie Caranzo. This work was a striking picture of two women, each carrying a cabbage in her hand. It was painted from an original photograph taken by the painter herself.
Another jazz painting was “Night Club” by Ernest Cosia of Douglaston. The painting portrayed the excitement and energy of a club on a hot night.
From March 5 to 30, the NAL presents “I See Me.” Artists are invited to submit original works which have not been entered in previous NAL juried exhibitions. These may include any media: paintings, collages, assemblage, sculpture, certified computer art. Entries must be suitably framed and wired.
A first prize of $250, second prize of $150, third prize of $50, three merit awards of $25 each, and six honorable mentions will be awarded.
