Droesch leads Royals to two more victories

Saturday the Royals had to claw their way back…

The Christ the King Royals won two games this past weekend against non-conference opponents, both from the Philadelphia area: Archbishop Carroll and Cardinal O’Hara. But the wins were anything but similar.

Saturday the Royals had to claw their way back from a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat the visiting team from Archbishop Carroll, 56-54, courtesy of a 12-0 to start the third quarter. Carroll would not lead again and would get as close as two, courtesy of two late three pointers.

Boston College signee Clare Droesch led the way for Christ the King with 26 points, 21 in the second half. As poorly as the team played in the first half, that is how good it played in the second, opening up as much as an 11-point advantage, thanks in part to a courageous performance by Candice Lindsay, who had eight points and nine boards.

On Sunday Christ the King traveled to Pennsylvania to take on Cardinal O’Hara, regarded as the top girls team in Philadelphia, and this time the Royals played well throughout.

Droesch again led the way with 36 points, as the Royals improved to 18-1 on the season.

St. Francis Prep 70, St. Savior 20. The Lady Terriers upped their record to 14-4 overall and 6-1 in league play with this win, led by Kim Wengel’s 15 points.

St. Edmund 55, St. John’s Prep 47. The Red Storm fell to St. Edmund this past week, as Carina Borgia and Miriam Toirado led with 20 and 16, respectively, for the winners.

The Mary Louis Academy 62, Fontbonne Hall 31. Jennifer Forgione paced the Hilltoppers with 16 points, improving the team’s record to 10-6.

St. Francis Prep 61, Sacred Heart 30. Prep was led by Dawn Gorynski’s 18 points and Caitlin Kennedy’s 14 boards.

St. Agnes 27, Nazareth 26. Vivian Said’s three-pointer carried St. Agnes to the league win last week. St. Agnes is now 5-7 overall and 4-3 in league action.

St. Agnes 50, Catherine McAuley 36. Said led the way with 14 points, followed by Jill Zolli with 10 assists.
