Even in defeat, Molloy head coach Richie Rodgers can appreciate how well the Stanners hockey team played Friday night at Abe Stark Arena on Coney Island in a 4-3 loss to St. Peter’s.
“They played the best game of their lives,” he said. “The kids played their hearts out.”
St. Peter’s, from the CHSHL ‘AA’ division, jumped ahead of the Stanners, 2-0. Second period goals by John DiGregorio and Nicky Wilk, on an assist from freshman Sean Kearney, brought Molloy (5-6-1 CHSHL ‘A’) to within, 3-2.
Kearney picked up his second assist of the game on Joey Evangalista’s goal as the Stanners tied the score at 3. But then the Eagles struck again on a deflection in front of net with 1:12 left in the third to ice the game for St. Peter’s.
DiGregorio and defenseman Alex Kalaf will represent Molloy in the 16th annual Senior Classic Game Sunday at Madison Square Garden. Face-off is approximately 4 p.m. after the New York Rangers/New Jersey Devils game.
Cardinal Spellman 4, McClancy 3. Trailing 4-0, the Crusaders rallied on goals by James Lynch and a pair by John Mascetti, but it wasn’t enough as McClancy fell last Thursday night at Murray Rink in Yonkers.
Mascetti, who will join fellow senior Chris Gavalas in the Senior Classic, had an assist as did Anthony DeMarco and Joe Barker.
McClancy (5-7 CHSHL B) takes on Bishop Ford Thursday at 5:15 p.m. at Murray Rink.
Fordham Prep 4, Christ the King 2. After a 7-1 loss to league foe St. Edmund last Thursday, which Royals head coach Pat Boller said, “was a total lack of effort on our part,” Christ the King returned with a respectable two-goal loss to CHSHL ‘AA’ squad Fordham Prep in an exhibition game Sunday night at Murray Rink.
Mike Rizzo and Vinny Dove scored the goals for the Royals (3-5-3 CHSHL A), who have two pivotal games against Holy Cross on the horizon. The first game is Saturday at 8:15 p.m. at the Ice Hutch in Mount Vernon and the second is Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. at Iceland in New Hyde Park.
Mike Brugess and Sal Croce will represent the Royals in the Senior Classic.
