A hair stylist was shot at the South Jamaica barber shop where he worked March 21 possibly after a dispute, police said.
Dorian Brown, 27, was shot in the chest and hip at 8:56 p.m. and taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital in critical condition, said Officer Chris Cottingham, a Police Department spokesman. Police said they do not know where Brown lives.
Brown underwent surgery and was in critical but stable condition Tuesday, said Juliet Lewis, a hospital spokeswoman.
The shooting suspect, whom police described as man in his 20s, was still being sought by press time.
Several of the victim’s colleagues in the busy House of Many Styles Barber Shop, 122-15A Guy Brewer Blvd., declined to comment on the shooting. One man who identified himself as the store manager refused to give his name and said there had not been a shooting at the store.
There are several hair styling shops nearby along the boulevard, including the Total Beauty Salon next door. The owner of that shop said she was naturally frightened when she heard the gun shots.
“I ran for cover,” said the woman, who declined to give her name.
On the other side of the barber shop, at the A & J Cleaners, a French dry cleaner, an employee, Hyum Kim, said he did not know there had been a shooting. “This is the first I heard of it,” Kim said.
Kim said he does not know what goes on at night on the commercial strip of Guy Brewer Boulevard, which cuts through a residential community with single-family homes.
“In the morning, there is a lot of garbage outside,” Kim said, “but when I close at night, it is clean. There must be a lot of kids outside at night.”
