Happy Birthday to Karen Hurtubise. She celebrated with some winning raffles. Tom Hurtubise did a fantastic job in obtaining all the prizes for the raffle for the Cub Scout Pack 18 Blue and Gold Banquet.
Cub Scout Pack 18 had their annual Blue and Gold Banquet at St. Fidelis auditorium. They celebrated the anniversary of Scouting in America. Of course, Cubs stand for Courtesy, Unity, Bravery, Service. The celebration included a fantastic potluck dinner, awards ceremony, raffles, dancing (Pack 18 must have taken lessons from Arthur Murray). It was wonderful watching them having such a good time. David Newcomb was right in the middle. All of the Cub Scouts had performances and they sure are getting ready for awards. Michael, (2 years old) joined his brother on the dance floor and he was quite a dancer— he stole the show! Plaudits to Catherine Mulvey, committee chairman.
Congratulations to Caleb Knight of Edward Bleeker Junior High School 185, who came in second place on the rock and mineral competition in which 14 schools participated. Caleb went to school an hour earlier for two months to prepare for the competition. His team member, Shinian Yee, and he were the only ones to receive a medal in the competition.
St. Paul’s Mardi Gras Dance was truly a delight. All that was, missing was Rev. James Hamilton, but he was in Turkey and was returning the next day. I am sure that committee member Greta Hruska will fill him in on all the details.
At Whitestone Lanes, congratulations to Barbara Niegerball who bowled 200.
Bernadette LaMagna, director of development and public relations for the Association of Blind and Retarded, Inc., is looking for volunteers to work in the Thrift Shop, which is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This Thrift Shop is a means of funding for the group. If you would like to volunteer, please call 321-3800. They will be holding their 45th anniversary Dinner Dance honoring George Andreozzi of Fleet Bank and Dominic Cefalu, Omni Office Systems on Friday, March 23 at Terrace on the Park in Flushing Meadow Park. Cocktails 7:30 p.m.; dinner, 8:30.
A Safe Driver course will be offered March 31 in the Madonna Room, St. Fidelis. Call the Rectory to register.
Congratulations to St Agnes High School in College Point whose students have volunteered their time and hard work for the last two years with Habitat for Humanity. They have assisted in building, cleaning and fixing up run-down houses so that they could be homes for families. St. Agnes High School has received approval for status as a “Habitat Campus Chapter.”
Poppenhusen Institute, 114-04 14th Road, College Point, offers Sign Language for children 7-12 years old — performance for parents is at 7 p.m. April 13. dates of the course, with instructor Barbara Aliprantis, are April 9 and 11, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. A $5 pre-registration fee is required.
Also at Poppenhusen, the Children’s Spring Break Performance with Steve Johnson’s Magic Variety Show — magic, juggling, illusion and a dramatic escape — is Tuesday, April 10. Tickets $5 general, $3 children, seniors and members. Saturday, March 10, 2 p.m. — slide show on “College Point, Then and Now,” $3, free to members. Saturday, April 21, 10 a.m. — historic bus tour through College Point and Whitestone, about two hours. Light lunch included: $18 general, seniors and members, $15. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. Saturday, May 12, 11 a.m. — historic walking tour through south and central College Point, about two hours. SABINA SAYS: It was quite nice celebrating Gabriela Gennario’s birthday and to see how wonderfully she is recuperating from her recent illness. Of course, her daughter, Millie Auletta, and her excellent care has been responsible for this. Also celebrating her birthday was Joe Cigala and my husband Rocky. Her favorite pastime is doing crossword puzzles, and she really can solve them all!
