"With a spinal chord injury it is tough to tell whether he will completely recover," Lee added. "It will be several months before we can see if the surgery benefits him or not."
According to Phelps Memorial Hospital officials, Mitchell is currently in good spirits and met with his family, friends and relatives only a few hours following the operation. Lee said Mitchell will remain in the hospital for another week before returning to Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains.
At the time of the shooting, Mitchell was returning to his dorm from Traditions, a local St. Johns area bar where he worked as a bouncer. According to police, Mitchell was involved in a dispute with a couple of bar patrons who were not students of the University. Once he reached the Universitys parking lot, Mitchell was shot in the back by one of the men involved in the bar brawl. A day later, 21-year-old Chris Prince was arrested and charged with shooting Mitchell. He will face a Queens Judge in court on Apr. 26.
