The New Hyde Park Wireless Diamondbacks went into Saturday's game with a record of 1-2, to play the undefeated Yankees for the second time this season. This time the result was different. The D-backs came out smoking. Billy Gillespie and Kevin Cheddie set the table in the first and second innings by never failing to get on base. Then Albert Marin cleared the table by continuing his torrid hitting streak with a single, triple and a home run. He improved his league-leading batting average to an astonishing .909. Better yet, the D-backs took a 7-1 lead into the third inning. But the Yankees where not going down so easy.
Brian Kellerher provided some offense with a big hit in the third. Then, Frankie Sadacario hit a triple to go with his two home runs on the day to narrow the D-backs lead. But superb hitting by the D-backs’ Tim Gallagher and excellent base running by both Gallagher and Joey Pellegrino proved to undue the win streak of the Yankees. Gallagher ripped a single to right field and scored. Meanwhile, Pellegrino walked, stole second then scored. In the end, the D-backs evened the season series at one game apiece with a 14-4 victory. The rubber match game will be played on Saturday, May 5.
The New Hyde Park Wireless Diamondbacks came out roaring in their second game of the season. The D-backs jumped out to a 2-0 lead on big hits by Billy Gillespie and Albert Marin. The D-backs had both their ace pitchers on the mound facing a tough A’s ball club. First, Albert Marin and next Mohammed Hashim threw for the combined win.
John Monteleone received a base on balls then raced around the bases to score a key run. Also, Joey Pellegrino was threatening on the base paths all day, hitting a hard single in the second inning. Finally, Christopher Ceron scored after being hit by a pitch for the final run in an 8-2 D-backs victory.
One Saturday the 14th of April, the D-backs had their third regular season game, this time the Pirates were on the slate. The Major Boys D-backs came out swinging, getting a long double off the bat of John Cacharani, who was awarded an RBI for his fine effort, as well as the game ball. David Treminio and Rammohan Ramakrishna hit the ball really hard all day long. Timmy Gallagher and Andrew McCarthy provided excellent fielding displays by either stopping balls that were hit at them or hustling to retrieve balls batted over their heads. Most importantly, they hit the cut-off man with the throws from the outfield, saving countless runs. The Diamondbacks suffered only their second loss of the year by the score of 13-2.
On opening day, the Gary Spitz Tigers took on the hard hitting North Fork Bank Indians. The Indians played long ball with home runs by Joey and Patrick, which turned out to be the game-winner. The Tigers scraped and clawed their way back in this very exciting game, only to come up short in a losing effort, 5-3. The Tigers’ Patrick Florian homered and singled and Mike Costanzo played a great game at shortstop with several put outs. Drew Devoe said after the game the Indians had the fastest runners he had ever seen.
The Gary Spitz Tiger played host to the Krupnick and Goldman Devil Rays last week. The Krupnick and Goldman Devil Rays jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with hits by Carlos Rodriquez, Joey G and then a monster blast by Joey Bobrow.
The Tigers answered right back in the second inning with hits by Mat Kruczowy, Tilak Shah and Robert Li. The Tigers Samuel Hoffman then came on and pitched five innings, allowing only two runs as the Tigers went on to win 10-5.
The Tigers’ John Barberi had an excellent day with a big base hit, three walks and scored two runs. Advan Akbari and Gabriel Santana showed great hustle in the field for the Tigers and Adam Spitz said after the game the Devil Rays played with great sportsmanship.
The Gary Spitz Tigers hosted the Nick and Maggies Braves Sunday, as the Tigers improved their record to 2-1 by defeating the Braves, who were 3-0 prior to this exciting match-up. Tyler Brodney and Gabe Gomez of the Braves had a great day at the plate, going 2-for-3, driving in two runs and both players scoring two runs.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and never looked back.
Matt Kruczowy was the hitting star for the Tigers with a single and a double. Kruczowy also pitched three scoreless innings. Jonathan Kruczowy also pitched well with eight strikeouts in three innings as the Tigers went on to defeat the Braves by the final score of 11-5.
Adam Spitz of the Tigers scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk along with excellent defense in the field by Drew Devoe, Robert Li, Samuel Hoffman and Gabriel Santana. Pavan Parikh was awarded the game ball for his sensational play in right-center field. Mike Costanza and Patrick Florian said after the game the Braves have a great team.
In the Glen Oaks boys junior hardball division , the Joe’s Pizza Storm defeated the Elmhurst Force, 18-3, on Saturday, April 14, in the QJBA Rookie division. Craig Lalla pitched four scoreless innings along with Brian Dietrich and Ross Kruczowy. Joseph Hannigan went 4-for-4 with a walk. Rolando Keyes and Anthony Faith both hit well with two long doubles. Pat Parino, along with Sean Wheeler , played great in the field as well as at the plate. Allan Werner was also 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
The M&M Deli Cardinals have had a hard time getting games so far this season between cancellation’s and rain-outs, but finally got to play on Saturday, April 21, against a feisty Petland Discount A's team and came away with a 16-8 victory. The starting and winning pitcher for the Cardinals was Steven Valet, who threw three innings, with the save going to Greg Conway, who retired all six batters he faced. At the plate, the Cardinals had Brian Biscotti lead the game with a home run. Also chipping in were Ryan Paroulek with four hits, John Fauth with three hits and John Ryan, who knocked in two runs. The next week is a tough one for the Cardinals, as they play the Yankees twice and the Mets once.
The Farm Division opened its season with the Glen Belle Car Service Royals facing off against the Queens Surface Brewers. The Royals were led at the plate by Nicholas Frangella, Christian Graddick and Billy Hannigan, who all had four hits, and Katie Biscotti, Sean Dolan, Jason Flaxman, Danny Graham, Steven Pelan and Louis Salzberg, who all had three hits. Randolph Herbert and Michael Kelly also both had two hits.
The Glen Oaks Chase Manhattan Bank Dodgers 13- and 14-year-old team defeated two teams from the United Queens Alliance, 9-1 on Saturday and 22-5 on Sunday.
Saturday’s game featured Kuri Nicoll pitching a three-hitter and striking out 14. Adam Yager homered and doubled and Adam Potash doubled and singled and Rony Abraham had two hits to pace the Dodgers.
On Sunday, the temperatures rose to the 80s and the Dodgers sizzled. Anubhav Raj pitched a complete-game victory, striking out five. The offense was again led by Adam Yager, who homered twice and had five RBIs. Stephen Colds had two singles and two doubles, Matt Carneir added three hits, Adam Potash had a single and home run, Jonathan Ganesh’s chipped in three hits and Anubhav Raj had two singles, a double and four RBls.
Nick and Maggies Braves, of the International Division, improved their record to 2-0 with their second consecutive win over the Marcella’s Pizza Orioles, 15-6.
The Orioles reached Braves’ starter Mike Kaplan for four unearned runs in the home second inning to take a 4-2 lead as Cadle Chu and John Rubenau had the big hits, but the Braves regained the lead in the visiting third. Josh Snider was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Jeremy Goldberg and Jon Dupuy followed with base hits. Following walks to Vladimir David and Gabe Gomez, Tyler Brodney and Amab Mltra stroked key base hits to put the Braves back in front. Two more Braves' errors to start the home third led to two more unearned runs as the Orioles closed to 7-6.
The Braves broke it open in the fourth inning with Vladimir David hitting a grand slam home run. Jon and Brian Louie also scored runs for the winners, Peter Yacoub earned a game ball for robbing Cadlo Chu of a home run on her drive to deep center field.
