Northshore Baptist 11, Fader Law 2. For Fader Law, Jonathan Seltzer completed his very first organized baseball game despite a swollen hand after getting hit hard by a pitch in the second inning. Jonathan Castanos pitched three good innings and hit a two-run home run for his team’s only runs.
Clearview Paint 5, Kelly’s Car Service 4. For Clearview, Danny Costa pitched three strong innings and had a key RBI in the bottom of the sixth. Vincent Guerra followed with two solid innings and Danny Wagner finished with a strong sixth inning, picking up the win. Mike Guzowski pitched for Kelly’s and had three hitless innings with nine strikeouts and added a double and triple at the plate. Liam Donahue also pitched very well in relief and added a double of his own.
Hot Bagels & Bake 12, Knights of Columbus 9. Hot Bagels & Bake posted the impressive win with a great offensive attack to beat Knights of Columbus. Knights of Columbus was led by Armond Tognans’ grand slam at the plate and great pitching from John Benussi and Anthony Polito. Hot Bagels & Bake improved its record to 2-0, as Derek Errigo went 3-for-3, including a three-run home run. Clutch hitting by Joe Nassirian, Derek Casanas and Joe Butler underpinned critical run-producing innings. James Jordan and Hriel Zottig each had their gold gloves on and showed everyone how defense is played. Yoav Katz earned his first win of the new season and added two hits, along with Anthony Musso and Mark DeBernardo. Johnny Pinerio was solid at shortstop.
Underweiser Law 8, Biordi Construction 7. Underweiser Law got a great pitching performance from Dean Papakovstonitis to rally for an 8-7 win. Papakovstonitis pitched three scoreless innings to lead his team to victory. Offensively, Matthew Serrano paced the attack with three hits for Underweiser. Biordi Construction was led by the fine pitching of Nicky Burns and Thomas Karcinski and the offense of Sam Rowen, who hit a grand slam to key a four-run third inning. Ben Gould had two hits and Matt Goldfine also added a triple on offense, while Rowen and catcher Anthony Scianna made fine defensive plays in the field to lead the defense for Biordi.
PeeWee Division
Mittman’s Medics vs. Mario’s Vinotheque. The weather was sweet and so was the fine three-inning PeeWee contest. The left side of the infield was “gold glove”, as third baseman Jordan Chateau and shortstop Grace Zottig caught everything that came their way. Tyler Cravitz led the hit parade for Mittman Medics, blasting three extra base hits, as the whole team seemed to prosper from their extra batting session. Corey Still was solid on defense as he seemed to field anything that came his way.
Minor Division
Bell Bay Florist 3, Mardene Construction 1. Bobby Blazicevic tripled and drove in one run, Santiago Salazar pitched two strong innings and Mike Gregory pitched two no-hit innings to seal the victory. Mike Burns hit a long double in the gap to score a run, Kevin Smith was outstanding behind the plate and Joey Marden pitched two innings with six strikeouts to keep the game close.
Bell Bay Florist 12, Valle Tile & Marbel 9. Bell Bay came back to win this slugfest behind Brian Risi’s long double to score two. Eddie Cooney tore up the bases, stealing third and scoring, Kiern Mahoney made a great catch in right to keep it close. For Valle Tile, Peter Lavantis went 4-for-4 with a double, Brian Wasserman blasted a triple and Matt Valle pitched three strong innings and had a triple.
Major Division
Bayside Plumbing 2, Stabile & Stabile CPA’s 0. David Pereira hit a solo home run and Anthony Ippolito had an RBI single as Bayside Plumbing recorded a 2-0 shutout of Stabile & Stabile CPA’s. Pereira allowed just one hit in picking up the win on the mound for Bayside Plumbing. Stabile got an outstanding pitching performance from Matt Becce, who went six innings and allowed just three hits. Joey Miccio had the only hit for Stabile to break up Pereira’s no hitter in the fifth inning.
Stabile & Stabile CPA’s 11, F. Nicholson Law 7. Stabile & Stabile CPA’s won their first game of the season, as Robert LaRusso (3-for-4) led the way with two doubles and two RBIs and catcher Pete Scianna went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the win. Pitchers Frankie Davi and LaRusso combined for the victory on the mound, giving up just six hits. Tommy Lee and Cody Stabile also chipped in with two RBIs each. F. Nicholson Law was led by Peter Regan, who pitched a fine game and the offense of Jimmy Keen, who had a triple and two RBIs in this well-played contest.
Mardene Construction 9, Starlight Caterers 7. Tom Chessman continued his strong pitching to pick up the win for Mardene, Mike Burns and Joe Marden had big hits in a seven-run fourth inning, Mike Gregory and Sean Donnelly had three hits each for Starlight, as their late-inning rally fell short.
Murphy’s Florist 4, F. Nicholson 3. Mike Wiederhold had the game-winning base hit for Murphy’s in what proved to be a tightly contested game. For Murphy's, John McManus turned in a sterling performance at first base, making some run-saving plays, while also contributing at plate. For F. Nicholson, it was Brian Meo, who went 2-for-3 with a triple, and teammate Peter Regan, who pitched three strong innings keeping the game close.
Bayside Plumbing 6, Biordi Construction 0. Sal Rongo pitched a complete-game shutout, getting a quick jolt of support from teammate David Pereira, who blasted a three-run homer in the first inning, his second of the season. Peter Black had three put-outs in left field to squash a rallying Biordi team. For Biordi, Danny Perry was flawless at first base, making several put-outs, and Garrison Gmuca had two hits.
C.J. Wolfhonds 4, Lloyds 1. Base hits by Rich Marschicello, Rory Pleva and Anthony Zupnick capped off a three-run forth inning, as C.J.’s edged out Lloyds, 4-1. Pitchers Alex Kalinkos and Sun Ho Kim were superb, each striking out 10 in six innings.
Applebees Bay Terrace 9, Biordi Construction 3. Michael Biordi's opposite field triple and Joseph Soares’ excellent defense at first base could not overcome a tremendous team effort by Applebees.
Stabile and Stabile 11, F. Nicholson 7. Frankie Davi picked up the victory, pitching three and two thirds innings; with the save going to teammate Robert Larusso, who contributed leadership on the field, and RBIs with his bat. Peter Scianna, Matt Becce, Cody Stabile and Ed Johnstone all hit safely and scored runs in a winning effort. Nick Athanasopoulos, Young June Lee and Peter Regan tried valiantly to contain Stabile’s bid for its first victory. F. Nicholson rallied right until the end, leaving two men stranded at second and third when the last out was made.
Junior Division
Bayside Collision defeats Peter Pan Games. For Peter Pan, Joe Rongo pitched five solid innings and Ed Pollard went 2-for-4. Bayside Collision’s offense produced 17 hits, including a home run by Dean Andriotis. Andriotis, Daniel Rosario and David Marrero also had three hits each. Pablo Restrepo was impressive as the closing pitcher.
Peter Pan Games defeat4e G&G Realty, 12-2. Michael Enright pitched his team to a win, giving up only two hits and no earned runs, and Joey O’Connor closed it out. Jameson Bosco and Nick Kofteris led the offense with three hits each and Joe Coppola contributed a game-breaking two-run triple. The team evened its record at 1-1. For G&G, Richie Armento led the pitching and Kevin Hyde turned in several defensive gems.
Charlie’s Market defeated Peter Pan Games, 14-4, in the season opener for both teams. Charlie’s was led by the splendid pitching and hitting of Brendan Daly. Daly had three hits, Jimmy Lana had two hits and Benjamin Caleca scored two runs. Peter Pan was lead by Joe Rongo’s two hits and three RBIs. Paul Savino played a stellar second base.
Charlie’s Market defeated Health Max, 7-5, in a game that ended with the bases loaded for Health Max. John Fini's great relief pitching — including three strikeouts in the last inning — saved the day for Charlie’s Market. Henry Wolters and Michael Garaufis made important defensive plays. Sean Smith and Richard Wharton each had two hits for Health Max.
Charlie’s Market erupted for 17 hits in an 18-8 victory over Jefferson Dems. Scott Roth lead Charlie’s with four hits. Alberto Gil and Wally Rosario each had big hits for Charlie’s Market. David Schiffman had a double and a triple for Jefferson Dems. Kevin Flanagan and Michael Bicchetti also had two hits.
