The fifth-graders from St. Andrew Avelino and Holy Family met on a very chilly Saturday morning earlier this month at Kissena Park for the first game of the season hoping to get the game in between cold and rainy weather.

The game came off without a hitch, as all 17 players from St. Andrew’s were ready for competition.

As the visiting team, St. Andrew’s led off impressively with Jamel Williams blasting a 1-0 pitch into left field for a triple . Later that inning, John McEntee walked and stole second and Michael LaPresti drove in two runs with a center field double.

James Kaso, the starting pitcher for St. Andrew’s, put in an impressive 2 1/3 innings until he ran into trouble in the third. St. Andrew's held a 3-1 lead until a Holy Family rallied to a 4-3 lead with men on first and third and only one out. John McEntee came in to put out the fire for St. Andrew’s. McEntee struck out the next batter and forced the next batter into a ground out. Holy Family extended its lead to 5-3 in the fourth with a blast deep into center field. McEntee pitch 2 1/3 innings, giving up one hit and striking out five. In the fifth, St. Andrew’s scrapped their way back into the game. With the game tied 5-5 heading into the sixth, Kyle Porter came in to pitch and, with the help of some fine defensive plays by James Kaso and catcher Brandon Kubic, St. Andrew’s preserved the tie going into the seventh inning.

Daniel Capeau led off the seventh inning for and blasted double into right field. Jamel Williams then walked and Kyle Porter sacrificed the runners over to second and third. Daniel Capeau then stole home, give St. Andrew’s a 6-5 lead. The rally continued for St. Andrew’s, as James Kaso singled, McEntee walked, LaPresti singled and Brandon Kubic walked to extend the team’s lead to 10-5. St. Andrew’s gave up one run in the bottom of the seventh, as Holy Family put together back-to-back hits against Kayle Porter. But Porter shut the home team down thereafter, as St. Andrew’s went on to win, 10-6.

The St. Andrew’s coaching staff and parents are proud of all 17 players, including” Philip McCahill, Sean McEnerny, David Daminquez, Jimmy Cecco, Eugene Kin, Peter Park , Emilio Benetiz, Charlie Aquista, Michael Guerin, Michael Ballesty and previously mentioned John McEntee , Kyle Porter, James Kaso, Jamel William’s, Brandon Kubic , Michael LoPresti and Daniel Capeau.

St. Andrew’s is looking forward to its next outing, Thursday, April 19, at 5:45 p.m. against St. Gregory’s at Flushing Memorial Field.
