The New Hyde Park Wireless Diamondbacks had their backs against the wall on Saturday, May 5, but instead of packing up the tents the D-backs dug in for their third victory of the season by the score of 3-1. Kevin Cheddie pitched a gem of a ball game for his first complete game win, striking out 14 of 20 batters faced and walking only one. In addition, he had a triple and walked. After the game, Kevin Cheddie received a roar from the crowd as well as the game ball.
Chris Ceron and Mohammed Hashim were brilliant in the field. Mohammed played catcher flawlessly and Chris played left field. Albert Marin continued his torrid hitting streak, going 3-for-3 and John Monteleone scored the winning run after being hit by a pitch.
The Andron Century 21 Pirates battled bravely, but went down in defeat for only the first time this season. However, they still own the league’s best record with a 6-1-1 total. Meanwhile, the season series stands tied at 1-1. The two teams will meet again Saturday, May 19.
The Glen Belle Car Service Royals played the Queens Surface Brewers in a fun-filled Farms Division game. The Royals were led by the strong hitting and three outstanding fielding plays of Michael Kelly. Christian Graddick and Sean Dolan also made very good defensive plays, as well as contributing a couple hits apiece. Other Royals having strong offensive games with four hits each were Steven Pelan, Kaitlyn Biscotti, Blaise Christoforatas, Jason Flaxman, Nicholas Frangella, Danny Graham and Billy Hannigan. Louis Salzberg had five hits and Randolph Herbert chipped in with three singles. The Royals had an excellent defensive game, recording 15 outs against a strong hitting Brewer team. Next up for the Royals is the J.J. Peabody's Rangers on Friday night at 6 p.m.
In the Major Division, the M&M Deli Cardinals lost their first game of week to the Andron Century 21 Pirates, 11-0, but bounced back to defeat the Met Food Mets, 17-6 and 13-4. The Cardinals record now stands at 4-3-1 for the season. In the first game against the Mets, Brian Biscotti went the distance for the win while striking out 11 batters. In the second game, Greg Conway got the win, while Steven Velez picked up the save. The hitting stars for the Cardinals for the week were Greg Conway with eight hits, six of which went for extra bases, Michael Osorio with two hits, Nikil Kumar with a single and three walks, Matt Stein with two doubles, Harrison Schneider with four hits, two of which were triples, Daniel Gasperetti chipped in a double and two singles, Steven Velez continued his strong hitting with four more hits, Charlie David hit his second home run of the year, John Fauth had two singles and a double, Ray Potestio re found his swing with three singles and two home runs and Brian Biscotti had two singles and a double. Next up for the M&M Deli Cardinals is the tough N.H.P. Wirless D'Backs.
On Saturday, April 28, the New Hyde Park Wireless Diamondbacks squared off against the Petland Discounts A’s. Billy Gillespie took out the big gun as he was on the mound for his first pitching start of the year. The A's jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the D-backs clawed their way back into the game. David Treminio sparked the team with their first run. Albert Marin scored a crucial run and Randall Cruz blasted a mammoth home run in the sixth inning. Joey Pellegrino put on an outstanding display in the field as well as at the plate. He was well rewarded with the game ball. In the end however, the D-backs found out the A's weren’t monkeying around as they came away with the 5-3 win.
On Tuesday May 1, the D-backs wrapped up their season series with the Ralph’s Ices Yankees. Again the D-backs slipped behind early in the game 3-0. Kevin Cheddie started to turn the tide in the third inning, knocking in Albert Marin with a single and also making some great scoops at first base. Rammohan Ramakrishna dazzled the fans with his fielding, as did Andrew McCarthy. McCarthy came away with the game ball. He enabled the Diamondbacks to hold on to a tie score going into the last inning. But with two out and two strikes on the batter, Frankie Sadicario delivered a huge home run which ultimately won the game and the series for the Yankees. NHP Wireless Diamondbacks slipped in the standings to 2-5, but don't look for them to melt away in the second half of this long baseball season. They have a reputation for coming back.
The Glen Oaks Joe's Pizza Storm playing in the QJBA boys Rookie Division split two games over this past weekend dropping Saturday’s game to a tough St. Mathias team, 17-2.On Sunday Glen Oaks rebounded for a 6-4 victory over the Millennium Kids.
Glen Oaks was over pounded by St. Mathias, which banged out 15 hits in only three innings. Sean Wheeler was the only Glen Oaks player to get a hit off the hard-throwing St. Mathias pitchers.
In Sunday’s game, Craig Lalla pitched a complete game, improving his record to 2-0. Anthony Faiths long home run provided Glen Oaks with the offense and was the winning margin in this exciting game. Glen Oaks’ record now stands at 4-1.
In a game played on Saturday morning the Modell's White Sox showed why they are becoming a powerhouse in the Glen Oaks International Division. The Sox overpowered the Orioles by coming back from 5-3 down to score 10 runs in the top of the fourth inning and never look back. Most of the White Sox players hit the ball well, especially Stephen Roa, Alex Reinkarz and Scott Guandasegui.
Scott Guandasegui started the game, pitching three innings and allowed all the Orioles runs. Joey Caraballo came in the fourth inning and shut down the Orioles by striking out all the batters he faced. Because time limit rules, Caraballo pitched two innings, striking out six, giving him a total of 18 strike outs in 17 innings.
The Modell’s White Sox now has won four games in a row.
Joey Caraballo fanned nine batters in three innings leading the White Sox to a 17-10 victory on over the Floral Homes Twins last Thursday. Caraballo Now have 42 strikeouts in 15 innings of work including a no-hitter against the Devil Rays. In this game against the Twins, Caraballo was removed in the third inning when the White Sox were leading by the score: of 10-3.
The Twins came back to and it a close game by battering the White Sox relievers and scoring seven runs in the fourth inning. But the White Sox battle back, scoring seven runs of their own in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a triple by Peter Bukewicz.
The Twins were undefeated heading into this game and both teams are looking forward to meet again and delivering another exciting performance. Both clubs showed lot of character and a drive to win.
