Minor Division
Major Homes 21, Iannece 2001 10. Leading the way for Major Homes was Chris Wong, hitting a home run and a double. Joey Rizzo also supplied three solid hits and displayed outstanding defense. For Iannece 2001, Kevin O’Connor had two doubles and Anthony Scifo had a home run.
Valle Tile and Marble 12, Starlight Caterers 11. For Valle Tile, Krish Chopra had the game-winning hit, while Danny Rossman and Dillon Kraus had a couple of hits each. For Starlight, Darren Shiu had a triple and Jesse McGrade had a few hits.
Party City 7, James Engravers 5. Clutch hitting by Paul Jordan and Jorge Ynona, each driving in two runs, lifted P.C. to the win. Casey Stroz also contributed to the win, reaching base safely in two at bats. Max Fernandez had a strong game for James Engravers.
Centa Plumbing 17, Printing Express 12. Centa had a late-inning rally with two outs to pull ahead of the Express. Dennis Pruden had four walks and five stolen bases, including two of home. Greg Grasso went 4-for-4 with three stolen bases. Peter Ceccere had two doubles and three RBIs, all helping Centa’s effort. Michael Valente had two triples and three RBIs and Brian Campbell had a long single, three RBIs and hard hit double for the Express come back effort.
Texas Division
Hot Bagels & Bake 21, Clearview Paint 3. This was a hitter’s game led by Hot Bagel’s Hriel Zottig. Zottig’s two hits and two RBIs put HB & B over the top to secure its sixth win. Joseph Butler pitched his fist career win and Yoav Katz hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season. Clearview Paints’ Kenny Marzocco and Joe Addamo each had outstanding games at the plate and Alex Costa’s third-inning home run had the entire park standing on their feet. This was a game filled with thrills and excitement with every swing of the bat. It was also a great display of team play and sportsmanship.
Prava Construction 12, Biordi Construction 11. In one of the most well-played games of the season, Prava Construction held on to defeat Biordi Construction, 12-11, last Saturday. Prava’s Joe Pravata struck out the side with the bases loaded to cap a wild finish. Down 8-4, Biordi centerfielder Anthony Scianna launched a grand slam home run with two outs to tie the score at 8-8 in the bottom of the fourth. Prava responded with four runs in the top of the fifth on a triple by Steve Tobias, who was called up from the Texas Farm Division, and a single by Sandy Tomasik. In the final frame, Leo Gussak brought Biordi back with a three-run homer to get within a run at 12-11. That's when Tomasik made the game-saving play with her relay throw home to hold Biordi’s Sam Gussak to a triple. Gussak, the tying run, would be stranded there until end the game.
Headlines 7, Underweiser Law 0. Ricky Sanchez pitched three innings of scoreless ball, chalking up seven strike-outs, while helping his own cause by hitting a grand slam in the third inning to lead Headlines past a determined Underweiser team. Headlines’ Alex Chateau homered in the first and Tommy Monte homered both times at bat to add fire to the Headlines attack. Underweiser Law’s Rachel and Amanda Wylie both played well in defeat.
Headlines 8, Clearview Paint 3. Dominic Formato’s second-inning grand slam home run jump-started Headlines’ offense. Jonathan Chen added two hits and two RBIs. Tommy Monte capped Headlines scoring with his four hits, including two grand slam home runs. Alec Munsey and Jeffrey Johnston sparkled on defense.
Headlines 10, Bayside Milk Farms 4. Alex Chateau and Dominic Formato combined to pitch a masterpiece for Headlines. Ricky Sanchez made a super running catch in center. Jonathan Chen (two hits) and Jake Sternick (two hits) each reached base every time up and scored on Tommy Monte’s two home runs. Justis Bosco starred for Bayside Milk Farm.
Headlines 5, Kelly's Car Service 4. Brendan Fitzpatrick hit a dramatic game-ending home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap Headlines’ exciting come-from-behind victory. Kelly’s led 4-0 on Jimmy Levantis’ timely hitting and Kevin Will’s fine pitching. Headlines’ great defense was highlighted by a catch by Eamon O’Connor at second base, which led to a double play. Fine pitching from Tony Davi and Michael Kohn kept Headlines close until they could tie the game in the fifth inning.
Junior Division
Peter Pan Games 7, Health Max 6. Joe Rongo drove in the winning run with a seventh-inning, two-out hit, scoring Chris Maldonado. Joey O’Connor got the win in relief, pitching a spectacular 2 2/3 innings. Jameson Bosco was 3-for-4 and Michael Enright was 3-for-3 with a laser-like three-run homer. Paul Savino played a flawless second base, helping pick off three runners, and Joe Caruso played a solid right field. For Health Max, Rich Wharton made several good plays at third base and Ryan Eisner had an excellent game behind the plate.
Major Division
Charlie’s Market 6, G&G Realty 5. In a true team effort, Charlie’s Market was led by Eli Hampton’s timely hitting and fielding and Benjamin Caleca’s defense in this closely contested game. Michael Dahan had three hits for G&G.
Bayside Plumbing 12, Stabile and Stabile CPAs 0. Sal Rongo smacked a two-run homer over the left center-field fence to rally his team in a veritable thumping of the CPAs. For the CPAs, Frankie Davi struck-out the side in the second inning, but in the third two errors followed by five walks led to the Stabile unraveling.
Lloyd’s Funeral Home 10, Stabile and Stabile CPAs 6. Keith Caparelli drove in a couple of runs smacking a line drive double to the right-field corner, while Sun Ho Kim pursued the record of home-runs hit in one Major Division season, by smashing a two-run homer in the first inning. For Stabile, Matt Becce had two hits on the day, one off of each of Lloyds’ pitchers.
F. Nicholson Law 8, Bayside Plumbing 3. Bayside Plumbing’s Vinny Virgintino threw a bullet from center field to nail a runner at the plate and his teammate, Matt Goldstein, hit a double to drive in two runs.
C.J. Wolfhounds 4, Biordi Construction 1. Alex Kalinkos pitched six innings, giving up two hits, two walks and striking out 11 Biordi batters. The Wolfhound offense was very quiet, scoring four runs on only three hits. For Biordi, Roger Pfeffer pitched three solid innings, giving up only one run. Biordi’s Paul Casano and John Delafiore both had hits and made contact every time at bat.
C.J. Wolfhounds 9, Murphy’s 8. Anthony Zupnick, 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and Rory Pleva, 2-for-2 with one RBI, led the offense for the Hounds. With the score tied in the fifth, Zupnick stole second, third and scored the go-ahead run on an overthrow. In the bottom of the fifth, Zupnick also threw out the lead-off runner to stop a Murphy rally. Steve Buccellato pitched a solid four innings for Murphy’s and hit a two-run homer and a double. With the score 8-7, Marc Buccellato blasted a solo homer to tie the game for Murphy’s
C.J. Wolfhounds 5, Lloyds 3. Clutch hitting from Henry Szmota (two-RBI single), Richie Marchisello (RBI double) and Anthony Zupnick (RBI single) led Lloyds to the victory. Gerard Cash had an RBI single and double for Lloyds. Pitcher Sun Ho Kim blasted a solo homer in the first to give Lloyds a 1-0 lead.
Murphy’s Florist 5, Stabile and Stabile CPAs 3. Mike Wiederhold (2-for-3) and Tommy Matera (2-for-2) led the charge for Murphy’s Florist, outlasting a game Stabile team. For the CPAs, it was another strong outing on the mound by Matt Becce, who pitched a complete game. Teammate Joey Wiley hit the ball well each at bat, starting a rally in the fourth inning with a line single up the middle.
Lloyd’s Funeral Home 11, Biordi Construction 5. Biordi’s Spiros Cominos went 4-for-5 with three doubles and Joey Catalanotto and Roger Pfeffer combined for nine solid innings of pitching.
F. Nicholson Law 7, Biordi Construction 0. For Biordi, Spiros Cominos pitched three innings with seven strikeouts and Joe Soares walked and got the only Biordi hit. A determined F. Nicholson team, led by Young June Lee, prevailed.
C.J. Wolfhounds 7, Stabile & Stabile CPAs 5. Anthony Zupnick’s two-run homer and James Lizzul’s double with two RBIs, along with Henry Szmota batting 2-for-2, were enough offense for the Hounds. With Stabile rallying in the sixth, it took a tremendous catch by leftfielder Eric Yue to stop a determined Stabile squad.
C.J. Wolfhounds 9, Murphy’s 7. Chris Paruch went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Anthony Zupnick homered twice, knocking in four runs, making the lead 8-1 after two innings for the Hounds. Murphy’s rallied to make the score 8-7 after five innings. Marc Buccellato led the offense with two solo homers for Murphy’s. Zupnick and Paruch pitched for the Wolfhounds’ 12th consecutive win.
PeeWee Division
Unique Finishes vs. Mittmans Medics. Michael Costa had a stellar outing with two solid hits and strong fielding. Alex Weiner was a star of the game, smacking RBI base hits and flashing some leather.
