The Mary Louis Hilltoppers bounced back from a demoralizing 1-0 defeat to rivals St. Francis Prep last Wednesday to win back-to-back games over the Christ the King Royals and establish a firm hold on second place in the Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan.
Last Thursday the Hilltoppers got a strong outing from starter Stefanie Gozdziewski, who fanned 10 en route to a 13-1 win over the Royals. In the victory, Jennifer McGroaty and Elizabeth Streith both homered.
Mary Louis followed the next day with a 8-0 shutout win behind pitcher Patricia Glauner, who struck out 14. Cassie Contino and Carol Kavanagh both tripled for the Hilltoppers in the win, which improved the team to 7-2 in league play.
Stella Maris 14, St. John’s Prep 4. Kate Scotko went the distance, striking out nine, while Elizabeth Jablonski belted a grand slam for Maris Monday.
St. Francis Prep 29, St. Agnes 1. Michelle Gutierrez had four hits and five RBIs for the Terriers, as Karla Grabher allowed just two hits with five Ks as Prep remained perfect in league play, improving to 8-0.
St. Francis Prep 1, Mary Louis 0. Kristen McEvitt allowed just two hits and struck out eight, including the final batter of the day with the tying run on third base to lift Prep to the win. Marina Ysaac drove in the game’s only run, a single in the first to score Marissa Evangelista.
Stella Maris 5, St. Agnes 4 (10 innings). St. Agnes twice let late leads slip away and when Mary-Kaitlyn Cunneen scored on Katie Scotko’s single in the 10, the game was over. Scotko struck out 12 for the winners.
