The St. Luke’s PeeWee Division boys baseball team, coached by Paul Cataldo and John Massa, captured the CYO PeeWee Queens ‘B’ Section championship by defeating St. Gregory’s, 7 – 1.
John Massa, Mike Socci and Mike DiNoto were outstanding pitching two innings each. Rich DiNardo set the tone defensively when he made a fine catch in left field in the first inning, while Anthony Polite, Ari Shaiken and Lambros Vandoros also turned in defensive gems.
The victory capped off a perfect season that saw the boys go 12-0 in the regular season. In the semifinals, the boys came from behind to beat St. Kevin’s, 6- 5. With one out in the last inning, John Mattia, John McDonogh, Mike Socci and Carlo Cataldo put together consecutive hits. A walk to Mike DiNoto loaded the bases and, with the score tied, clean-up hitter John Montoya drew a walk to force in the winning run. Dean Glykas was the leading hitter, batting over .700 for the season. Mark Schmidt, James Carmody and Justin Pearlman each made contributions throughout the year.
