Three teenagers injured in the collision of an Acura with an SUV in Kew Gardens Hills that killed an 18-year-old from Flushing last week were expected to recover, hospital officials said.
Shahid Ahmad, 18, who was a passenger in an Acura that was demolished in the wreck, was pronounced dead at New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens several hours after the accident, which occurred at 4:15 p.m. Jan. 16.
According to police, the Acura was traveling westbound on the Horace Harding Expressway when it struck a Chevrolet Suburban, hit the wall of the overpass and crashed into the front of AMAF Supply Inc., a heating and air-conditioning supply store at the corner of 148th Street.
Police described the passengers in the back seat as being “ejected” from the car when the vehicle smashed into the store.
The injured passengers, rushed to NYHQ, were Rashad and Adnan Ahmad, both 17, who remain in stable condition. The car’s driver, Heshmatullah Hafizzi, 17, was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital Center, according to a hospital spokeswoman. As of press time Tuesday, Hafizzi was in good condition and expected to be released soon, King said.
Newsday reported Shahid Ahmad lived in Flushing and that Rashad was his brother. It was not clear whether Ahmad was related to the other two teens.
The crash decimated the Acura, which had to be ripped apart in order to remove Hafizzi from the vehicle.
Eyewitnesses said the vehicle was moving as fast as 60 mph, but police said there was no indication that the car was drag racing, Newsday reported.
Shahid died from blunt impacts to his head and torso. His arms and legs were also injured, according to the medical examiner’s office.
As of press time Tuesday, police had made no arrests in the case, but were still investigating.
