I hope you are entrenched in what you expect to accomplish for the year 2002. It is always better to start at the beginning, as it gives you more time for your expectations.

Poppenhusen Institute offers a host of youth programs:
• Free Choral Group for 10- 17-year-olds on Tuesdays, 4:30-6 p.m. Children will perform at local nursing homes in the future.
• Free Drama/Acting for 10- to 12-year-olds Mondays, 6:30-7:30 p.m. and 13- to 17-year-olds from 7:30-8:30 p.m.
• Group piano lessons for 5- to 12-year-olds cost $60 for 10 consecutive sessions. Held Mondays or Fridays from 4-5 p.m. or 5-6 p.m.
Poppenhusen also offers programs for adults:
• Country Line Dancing, Mondays, 7-8 p.m. for beginners and 8-9:30 p.m. for intermediate.
• Poppenhusen Poetry Society meets the second Sunday of each month from 7-9 p.m.

The institute also offers a 40- to 60-minute slide presentation on the history of College Point. Please call the institute if you wish to schedule a presentation at your organization.
There’s no better bowling than at Whitestone Lanes: Maureen Puppolo bowled 232 and 241. Her husband Vinnie bowled 287. I am sure they are both working toward that perfect 300 game.
Helen Mazzarello got 199. I am sure that her husband Fred will give her lessons to get that extra point. Angela Cespe started her first season this year and wanted to be remembered for her 99.
Flushing Town Hall hosts 100 Years of Austrian Music with the Con Brio Ensemble Sunday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15, $10 for members and $5 for children. Call 463-7700 for more information.

The Knights of Columbus held a benefit for Firefighter Dan Harlin, who died Sept. 11 at the World Trade Center. He was a husband to Debbie and father to three young children. He was the son of Wilbur and Caroline Harlin. Call Bill Wick 746-5995 to contribute to the fund.
St. Agnes High School Parents Association presents “A Night at the Races” Saturday, Feb. 9, in the auditorium at 123rd Street and 14th Avenue. Gates open at 7 p.m. Post time is 7:30 p.m. The $10 fee includes hot dogs, chips, beer, wine, soda, coffee and dessert. For tickets and information, call 353-6276.
If you are traveling, read these practical tips:
• Leave early for the airport — at least two hours in advance.
• Carry a paper ticket. This will hasten your security check.
• Don’t forget photo ID and try to carry more than one. Government issued IDs are the best.
• Many items are being confiscated including pocket knives, razors, scissors, nail clippers, knitting needles, aerosol cans and lighter fluid.
• Remember that gift wrapped or unopened packages may be opened.
• Pack fewer items.
• Don’t dawdle at the airport and be aware that curbside checking is no longer available.
• Limit your send-offs.
• Be polite.
• Know who to call if your flight is canceled.
• Be mindful of your surroundings at all times and report any suspicious behavior or packages to law enforcement.
• Be patient!
Holy Trinity Parish presents “Come to the Cabaret” Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. in Haggarty Hall. A donation of $7 is requested and tickets are available after Mass and from the parish office. No tickets will be sold at the door.
Maryann Nevins has a cute little granddaughter named Ashley and she kept up with my questions.
SABINA SAYS — Lucie Anne and Ray Schnell made a handsome pair at their wedding. The highlight of the wedding party was Terrence King who at first didn’t want to be the ring bearer and then stole the church show at St. Fidelis. He even waved to me as he came down the aisle. I have a feeling that he didn’t take his tuxedo off when he went home and went straight to bed dreaming of doing it again.
A very happy anniversary to Alan and Charlotte Leff. They certainly can give lessons on happy marriages. Charlotte was knitting a very pretty blanket and I asked Alan if he needed extra warmth as he got older. He just smiled.
