What have we lost as a result of September 11? How have we changed? What should happen on the World Trade Center site in the fixture?
On Sunday, April 14, from l p.m.-6 p.m., the Municipal Arts Society, in local partnership with the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts, is offering a day of free workshops open to the public to express their opinions, ideas, concerns and visions for the future.
These visions and strategies will be collected at 50 sites all over the city, assembled for presentation into a single document and presented to the decision makers in New York City and the region. This community event takes place at Flushing Town Hall, 137-35 Northern Boulevard, corner of Linden Place, in Flushing Queens. Advance registration is requested at 463-7700 Ext. 222.
Local facilitators include: Rabbi Charles Agin, Rabbi Emeritus of the Free Synagogue of Flushing; Arlene Jordan, supervisor, expressive arts, School District 25; Louise Weinbag, consulting curator to Flushing Council; and Betty Smith, Tony Quesada and Lucy Davidson, staff members of Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts.
Art and design will play a special role, with collage artist Tina Seligman and sculptor Marvin Brown coordinating an art activity that actresses key questions. Simultaneously, an architect from the Municipal Art Society will lead an architectural design workshop.
A special finale is being planned at 5:30 p.m. when “Standing Tap,” an original song about Sept. 11 written by Barry Strutt, will receive its world premiere on the stage of Flushing Town Hall.
Capitol recording artist Strutt, who is a partner in the law firm Keegan, Keegan and Strutt, has assembled an all-star band, including vocalist Patrick Jude, who debuted as Judas in the original Broadway production of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” pianist Benny Key, music director of “George M,” guitarist Ayodele Maakeru, who is currently touring with Miriam Makeba, and Clyde Bullard, seasoned Broadway and pop world bassist and staff member of Flushing Town Hall. Also appearing are vocalists Barbara Roberts and Shevon Jacob.
