FLUSHING — A man in his 30s was found dead Tuesday in the Bravo supermarket parking lot at 44-24 Kissena Blvd., police said.
The body was discovered about 12:30 p.m.
Police sources said the man was most likely homeless and his death was not thought to be suspicious.
The investigation was continuing.
Alzheimer’s patient found after wandering from home
GLEN OAKS — A missing Alzheimer’s patient, 81, was found Monday after she wandered from her home on 78th Avenue, police said.
The woman’s brother reported her missing and, after a search of the area, an officer found her on Union Turnpike in Hollis Hills.
Clearview Jewish Center exterior defaced
FRESH MEADOWS — An unidentified person spray-painted a Star of David on the outside of the Clearview Jewish Center at 16-50 Utopia Parkway about 10 a.m. Tuesday, police said.
There were no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
Kelly announces manpower boost for Queens, boroughs
MANHATTAN – New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly announced Tuesday he is redeploying 300 investigators to bolster the department’s crime-fighting efforts. He said the transfers will become effective April 15 and increase the size of precincts’ detective squads.
In addition the Street Crime Unit, which became known for the shooting incident in which an unarmed man, Amadou Diallo, was shot in front of his apartment building, will be folded into existing Patrol Anti-Crime Units.
Kelly said the moves are based on analysis of personnel assignments done in 2002.
“The Department’s uniformed headcount is down by nearly 3,000 officers (37,640 vs. 40,710) since July of 2001,” Kelly said. “This redeployment will ensure our investigators are assigned where they are needed most in the precincts fighting crime.”
Queens Village tax scam perpetrator pleads guilty
QUEENS VILLAGE — Michael Griffiths, 44, pleaded guilty to three felony counts in connection with a major tax scam, said New York State Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Arthur Roth and Albany County District Attorney Paul Clyne.
The Queens Village resident, who faces 3-1/2 to 10 years in jail, was charged in a 17-count indictment last fall after submitting 1,800 fraudulent New York State personal tax returns for 1999 using phony social security numbers, said the district attorney.
He said if Griffiths had succeeded with the scam he would have gotten more than $1.6 million in fraudulent funds.
“Instead, Mr. Griffiths will serve several years in state prison reflecting on his folly,” said Roth. “We intend to seek tough penalties for those who would steal from legitimate taxpayers.”
Griffiths was expected to be sentenced May 23.
11-year-old missing at Baisley Pond Park
SOUTH JAMAICA – An 11-year-old boy was reported missing early Wednesday morning from the Baisley Pond Park area, police said.
A search for the boy, whose name was not released, began Wednesday at 1:45 a.m., said Community Affairs Officer Jeanetta Williams of the 113th Precinct. He was reported missing from Rockaway Boulevard and 150th Street, Williams said.
The boy was still missing Wednesday, and the search was continuing, Williams said.
Rockaway girl, 2, dies in house fire
ROCKAWAY — A 2-year-old girl died in a fire that engulfed a home at 228 Beach 87th St. about 1:17 a.m. Sunday, police said.
Five other individuals were injured in the fire: a 37-year-old man, a 38-year-old woman, two 14-year-old boys and a 2-month-old girl. The victims were taken to Nassau Medical Center in serious but stable condition, the NYPD said.
Astoria man shoots self in apparent suicide
ASTORIA — In an apparent suicide, a 31-year-old man shot himself in the head about 10 p.m. Sunday, police said. The man who lived at 31st Street and 21st Avenue, locked himself in a room at his home with two guns, then climbed out a window onto the roof of the house, police said. Family members fled.
Police were called and, as officers searched for the gunman, they heard two gunshots, police said.
They found the victim on the roof with the apparent self-inflicted wounds, the NYPD said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No one else was injured.
Forest Hills man falls to death in Manhattan hotel
FOREST HILLS — A 42-year-old man was found dead inside the Marriot Marquis Hotel Atrium at West 45th Street and Seventh Avenue in Manhattan, police said.
Police said Gregory Ellyn of 77-34 113 St. in Forest Hills was found April 3 at 10:31 p.m. He fell from the 29th floor, but it was unknown if he fell or jumped, said the NYPD.
2 charged in Jackson Hts. with attempted murder
JACKSON HEIGHTS — Two men were arrested late last Thursday in the shooting of an unidentified 21-year-old man at 101-15 37th Ave. about 4:53 a.m., police said.
Alfred Billerba, 18, and Fernando Castillo, 21, both of 104-02 51st St. were charged with attempted murder in the shooting, police said.
The victim was shot once in the head and listed in critical condition at Elmhurst Hospital Center.
Woman found dead in Woodside apartment
WOODSIDE — A unidentified 31-year-old woman was found dead on the bathroom floor in her apartment at 61-20 43rd Ave. about 5:20 a.m. Saturday, police said.
The medical examiner will determine the cause of death. The investigation was continuing, police said.
Police arrest suspect after LIC bank heist
LONG ISLAND CITY — A 51-year-old man allegedly took an undisclosed amount of money from a Dime Savings Bank Tuesday, but was captured shortly afterward by officers responding to the call, police said.
Police said the incident occurred about 12:15 p.m. when the suspect entered the bank at 46-10 Queens Blvd., and handed a note to a teller demanding cash.
The suspect fled on foot but was soon arrested by 108th Precinct patrol officers, police said.
Pedestrian hospitalized in Jackson Heights accident
JACKSON HEIGHTS — A 80-year-old man was hit by a 1995 Nissan at 10:55 a.m. last Thursday as he attempted to cross the street at the intersection of 75th Street and 37th Avenue, police said.
The unidentified victim, who was hit as the car backed into a parking spot, was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center in critical condition, police said. The NYPD said the 44-year-old driver was issued a summons for unsafe backing.
Truck hits bicyclist on Queens Blvd.
LONG ISLAND CITY — A 35-year-old woman was hit by a truck while riding her bicycle eastbound on Queens Boulevard and 32nd Place about noon Monday, police said.
She was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center with minor injuries, the NYPD said. No summons were issued.
Off-duty policeman foils attempted Astoria robbery
ASTORIA — Off-duty police officer Alkiviadis Panopoulos stopped Frederick Hills, 25, of 22-73 Steinway St., Monday at 4:20 p.m. as he allegedly tried to rob The Hygrade Deli at 41-20 Ditmars Boulevard, police said.
Police said Panopoulos sustained minor injuries in a struggle with Hills, who allegedly had a gun. He was arrested on charges of attempted robbery and assault, said police.

ASTORIA — An unidentified man was shot in the stomach by an unknown gunman about 9:45 p.m. Friday at the corner of Astoria Boulevard and 8th Street, police said.
The victim was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center. Officers said there was no known motive for the shooting. and no arrests have been made. The investigation was continuing, the NYPD said.
