The York College/Community Commemorative Quilt Committee held its third annual endowment dinner Saturday night and honored Queens Borough President Helen Marshall.
The quilt project committee is a community group started by Mary Kidd, wife of York President Charles Kidd, and her fellow community members. The group consists of 35 organizations uniting to build and nurture York College.
The committee sponsors the event to help attract quality students by offering assistance to those working toward a degree who face financial barriers.
The program, established in 1998, honored Martin Luther King Jr., Black History Month and Women’s History Month and included an exhibit of artwork, memorabilia, poetry readings and choirs.
Some of the works displayed used traditional African design to trace African-American history. There were traditional African masks and photographs of some recent events — the Million Man March, for example — which have affected southeast Queens.
