Bobby Glade Sr. Fwd. Christ the King
Glade wasn’t the biggest or strongest player, but no one was more important to their team than the Royals captain. Never was that more evident that Christ the King playoff game against St. Joseph by the Sea. Because of a dentist’s appointment that kept him out of school, the senior forward from Broad Channel couldn’t play in the game and the Royals lost, 3-2. Glade finished with 11 goals, 17 assists for 28 points in 16 games.
Joey Evangelista Sr. Fwd. Archbishop Molloy
Molloy coach Richie Rodgers has seen Evangelista get cross-checked, kicked and punched in the head and the Stanners captain kept coming back for more. The senior from Bellerose, who along with goaltender Adrian Podpirka, was a four-year player at Molloy, had 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points.
James Bertorelli Jr. Fwd. St. Francis Prep
There wasn’t a game this year in which Bertorelli didn’t get a point. He had 21 goals and 11 assists during the regular season, but it was playoff time when the junior forward from Astoria was most lethal. He scored 11 goals in five playoff games, including seven in a pair of elimination games to help lift St. Francis Prep to the CHSHL ‘B’ title. Bertorelli, who was named the MVP of the playoffs, was also the ‘B’ division’s Most Valuable Forward.
Dan McCloskey Sr. F/D St. Francis Prep
McCloskey wasn’t the biggest player on the ice, but the 5-foot-6, 155-pound senior captain from Whitestone could hit with the best of them. He was one of the team’s top forwards, but unselfishly moved back midway through the year to help shore up the defense. McCloskey, who had eight goals, 16 assists for 24 points, is heading to Division III Western New England College in Springfield, Mass.
Mike Sangiamo Jr. Def. Archbishop Molloy
At 6-foot-2, 220-pounds, Sangiamo is the definition of a hard-nosed physical defenseman and, according to Molloy coach Richie Rodgers, “can hit with anyone.” Just ask CHSHL ‘B’ division leading scorer Andrew Russo from St. Peter's, who saw plenty of Sangiamo in a three-game semifinal series. The junior defenseman from Ridgewood, who at times plays too physical, is also a deceptively fast skater.
Matt Cammarata Fr. Gtend Holy Cross
It’s not so much what Cammarata did, but what didn’t he do for CHSHL ‘C’ division champion Holy Cross. With the poise of a veteran, the freshman from Glendale led all three divisions with a 1.93 goals against average, had a .920 save percentage and was playoff MVP and Most Valuable Goaltender in the ‘C’ division.
Second Team
Joe Temperini So. Fwd. Holy Cross
According to Holy Cross coach Mike Mitchell, Temperini could have played on the varsity team last year, but was held back because of a numbers issue. The sophomore forward, who was serenaded by the chorus, “There you go, Joe,” by the parents every time he scored, had eight goals and 12 assists and was one of the Knights leading playmakers.
Kevin Moran Jr. Fwd. McClancy
Much like New York Islanders sparkplug Steve Webb, Moran’s impact is felt more along the boards than on the scoreboard. Sure the 5-foot-9 junior from Bellerose had four goals and five assists for nine points, but Moran is on the second-team because of his two-way play and because he’s one of the hardest hitting forwards out there.
Luke Desmond Sr. Fwd. St. Francis Prep
Bertorelli wasn’t the only offensive threat for St. Francis Prep this year. Desmond, a senior forward from Floral Park, had six goals and eight assists in 15 regular season games, good for 11th in the league. He also scored a goal in the Terriers’ 4-1 win over St. Joseph by the Sea to wrap up the semifinal series.
Chris Knipe Sr. Def. McClancy
Knipe was named the Most Valuable Defenseman in the ‘C’ division and is one player who will be sorely missed in the Crusaders locker room and on the ice next year. A four-year player, the senior from East Elmhurst was also McClancy’s top playmaker.
Steve Cameron Sr. D/F St. Francis Prep
Cameron’s greatest contribution in St. Francis Prep’s championship run couldn’t be found in the stat sheet. That’s because the senior from Bayside, who was moved up front midway through the year, was asked to do the dirty work, to shadow the league’s leading scorer, St. Peter’s Andrew Russo. His superb defensive work was as important as Bertorelli’s goal-scoring prowess.
Mike Giacomino Jr. Gtend. St. Francis Prep
St. Francis Prep coach Billy Turner said Giacomino was good enough to start the last couple of years, but he was stuck behind Jason Black, who was named MVP of last year’s playoff series. But when Black went down with mono midway through the year, the junior from Whitestone got his chance and didn’t disappoint, making several key stops in the Terriers championship run.
