Minor Division
Starlight Catering 12, Bayside Milk Farm 8. After spotting their opponents a six-run lead, Starlight Catering came back from the big deficit to win their game with Bayside Milk Farm, 12-8. Relief pitcher Liam Donahue was able to shut down Milk Farm’s hitting attack by pitching three scoreless innings and picking up the victory in the process. The bats of John Wynne and Vishnu Rajan played key roles in Starlight’s come-from-behind win, as they drove in the decisive runs late in the game. Danny Costa was the starting pitcher for Milk Farm and pitched an awesome three innings before leaving the game with his team still in the lead.
PeeWee Division
Hollis Court Collision vs. Padavan’s Paragons. The stars for Hollis Court were Santino Difiore, showing excellent batting skills, and Daniel Colflesh, who belted a grand slam. Everyone on Padavan’s played a great game.
Prava Construction vs. Philmar Machine. Prava was led by the fine defensive play of Steven Nacinovich and Chris DeSantis, who also had two hits a piece. Every player on Philmar had two hits each.
Tiger Schulmann’s Karate vs. Mensch Lumber. The Tiger Schulmann’s team played an excellent all-around game. Mensch Lumber played an absolutely outstanding defensive game. Excelling with the bat and flashing some fancy leather were Alex Wiener and Jared Milano.
MTM Carpentry vs. Anna Marie’s Bagels. MTM turned in an excellent game by all players. Anna Marie’s was led by the fielding of Jennifer Kopp and Jason Javic. Liam Fitzpatrick and Nicholas Bruno were the team’s slugging stars.
Texas Division
R. Klein CPA 14, Outback Steakhouse 12. R. Klein CPA’s Alex Fable went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer that proved to be the difference in this tight offensive contest. Steven Arroyo had a triple and two RBIs and pitched two solid innings for the victory. John Halkedakis also had a triple and two RBIs for the winners. Outback Steakhouse was led by Zachary Droblaf, who was on base all four times and had three RBIs. Francesco Dire was on base two out of four times, as was Michael Talamora, who had two RBIs in defeat.
Monahan & Fitzgerald’s 7, R. Klein CPA 4. Monahan’s was led by Andrew Schindler, who had a bases-loaded triple in the fifth inning to put Monahan’s ahead to stay. Kevin Durkan (two hits) pitched three solid innings, allowing only one run while striking out six. Anthony LaScala also contributed with a nice defensive play in the outfield. For R. Klein CPA, Robert Groger threw three strong innings, striking out eight and contributing two hits. Robert Klein had a big hit and made two outstanding defensive plays in the loss.
Papazzio’s Restaurant 17, Applebees of Bayside 9. Chris Doherty (grand slam) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and five RBIs for Pappazio’s in their 17-9 win over Applebees. Daniel Smith was on base four times and scored four runs. Brian Wren (two hits and an RBI) and Thomas DeCicco (two hits, one RBI) also contributed to the win. Strong pitching by Stephen McNamara (three innings) helped secure the win. Applebee’s was led by centerfielder Yianni Economu, who was on base three times and had two RBIs and one run scored. Jeremy Shui also had one hit, scored twice and had an RBI.
Mittman’s Medics 11, Papazzio’s Restaurant 5. Papazzio's Restaurant erupted for five runs in the bottom of the second inning but couldn’t erase a big lead by Mittman’s Medics. After a lead off base hit by Michael McGrath, Thomas DeCicco drove in the first Papazzio run. Thomas Dougherty, Randall Gaskins and Daniel Smith also had one RBI each in the second inning. Nicholas Ziangas completed Papazzio’s scoring with a hard hit single to drive in the fifth and final run.
Outback Steakhouse 8, Papazzio’s Restaurant 7. Outback Steakhouse prevailed after building a four-run advantage early in the game. Papazzio’s was led by Michael Guadalupe, who blasted a two-run homer and drove in three runs. Michael McGrath (six strikeouts on the mound) was on base three times and had two hits, including a monster double. Papazzio’s Thomas DeCicco had a single and made some great plays in the field. Brandon Putre (one run scored, one RBI) was stranded on base as the tying run Thomas Dougherty also drove a run for Papazzio’s in a well-played and exciting game.
Biordi Construction 8, Jackson Hole 1. Frankie Biordi continued his fine pitching, allowing just one run in his last nine innings to pace Biordi to an 8-1 victory over Jackson Hole. Joey McManus and John Varsam received game balls for their great games offensively, getting on base two times each. Defensively, J.B. Frees and Nicky Maccia kept Jackson Hole at bay for the victory.
Prava Construction 9, ZAB 4. Joe Black, Kevin Andujar and Fareed Nazin came through offensively to lead Prava Construction past ZAB in a well-played game. Joseph Bello and Baseer Tariq paced ZAB both at the plate and in the field, keeping the game close.
Prava Construction 7, Nicolosi Law 6. John Aponte threw three shutout innings and Steven Guadalupe hit a two-run homer to give Prava Construction a 7-6 victory over Nicolosi Law. Nicolosi Law was led by strong pitching from Rafael Dilones, great defense by Joseph Butler and a two-run double by Jason Duque.
Major Division
Valle Tile 11, Party City 2. Valle Tile’s Anthony Scifo scored two runs, going 2-for-4, and teammate Leo Nin hit a bases-loaded double. On the mound for the “Tile,” Darren Shiu pitched three shut-out innings to seal the game. Party City saw Cal Sternick pitch three scoreless innings and Sam Koenig slap a two-RBI double for the only Party City runs.
Brigandi Barristers 5, Bell Bay Florist 4. In a tightly contested game, the Barristers scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, assuring them a tie for first place after the second week of the season. For the Barristers, it was the one-hit pitching (in three innings) of George Theodoropoulos, shutting down a potent Bell Bay offense. Steven Maher added the offense for the Barristers, going 2-for-3 and scoring two runs. Joey Kurtz was a defensive standout for the Florists, charging up two assists and a put-out.
Brigandi Barristers 9, Valle Tile 5. Valle Tile’s Rob Schule had two hits and a run scored, as Anthony Scifo put in a one-hit outing on the mound for two innings. It wasn’t enough to stem the tide of a surging Brigandi offense led by Chris Marzano, who singled, scored, and batted in an RBI. Anthony Zupnick’s hot bat smacked two doubles, picking up three RBIs for the victors.
V.I. Pizza 7, Bell Bay Florist 6. A pair of three-run home runs for the Florists, one by Mare Buccellato and the other by Mike Wiederhold, were not enough to defeat a hungry and tenacious V.I. Pizza. The scorching Nick Copelli hit a double with runners at second and third in the bottom of the sixth to win the game for the Pizza Men. Luis Tavola did a fine job at the hot corner, saving some extra base hits, thereby keeping the Pizza close for Copelli’s heroics.
Biordi Construction 6, Printing Express 2. Spiros Cominos chalked up three shutout innings and Joe Soares closed the sixth to give Biordi the victory. Zack Zizelis put in fine innings at first base with excellent defense and several putouts. For the Express, Chris Hamm pitched two shutout innings and Kevin Holze drilled a bases-loaded double to pick-up the lone RBIs for his team. With two more meetings to go, there will certainly be good baseball at Valle East in Crocheron Park.
Biordi Construction 11, Party City 1. Zach Caccavale hit a triple and Cal Sternick pitched three innings of one-run ball for Party City, while teammate Nicky Ryan went 2-for-3 while playing an incredibly wide-ranging shortstop. Still, it could not prevent a streaking Biordi team from scoring the win. George Rowen’s line drive home tun to center field in the first and triples socked by Anthony Costa, Michael Biordi, and Spiros Cominos provided the other offense in this contest. Caraballo was the winning pitcher, going six innings, allowing four earned runs and fanning 16 batters.
Printing Express vs. Mardene Construction. In the best pitched game of the young season, John Apostolo of Mardene and Chris Hamm of the Express pitched four innings of one-hit ball apiece. The Express scratched across a run in the bottom of the sixth off Sean Donnelly. Mike Valente singled with one out and, after a walk to James O’Brien, Chris Palmero reached on a fielders choice. Ricky Strauss ripped the first pitch he saw from Donnelly down the right field line for the game-winning RBI. Kevin Holze picked up the win with two scoreless innings. Joey Marden had two hits in the losing cause.
Junior Division
Murphy’s Florist 17, Jim-eez 9. In a game that saw five lead changes, Murphy’s Florist outlasted Jim-eez, 17-9. Chris Catalanotto was 3-for-4, including two monstrous home runs to total five RBIs. The bash brothers, Matt and Joe Bruno, were a combined 4-for-7 and Joe O’Connor was 3-for-4, falling one double shy of the cycle. Matt Becce was 2-for-2 with a walk. Phil Varsam and Michael Gold were each 2-for-3 with a walk. Paul Kim had two RBIs. Jason Kilcheski, Paul Savino, Joe Catalanotto, Michael Banome and Marinos Iacovou held the defense together, as Murphy’s improved to 4-1. For Jim-eez, Raj Kissoon was 2-for-3 with a walk and five RBIs and John McManus called a fine game behind the plate.
