Christopher’s hat trick leads Bayside over Forest Hills

By Dylan Butler

Allison Christopher had the same feeling when she walked onto the field at Forest Hills High School as she does every other game.

She was hungry.

And what better way to satisfy her craving than a serving of goals, super-sized. The senior on the Bayside soccer team scored three goals, including two goals in the opening nine minutes, as the Commodores feasted on a bevy of Forest Hills defensive mistakes in a 6-2 win Monday.

“It’s who’s hungry, who wants it more,” said Christopher, who was a back-up goaltender last year. “We were hungrier and we wanted it fast.”

Bayside (5-5-3 Queens A) wasted little time, scoring three goals on three different Forest Hills defensive miscues in the opening nine minutes.

After Anika Simms scored from 12 yards out, Christopher ran onto a long ball from Tyque Nelson and, after Forest Hills backup keeper April Cantin collided with a defender, she easily slotted the ball into the open net to put the Commodores ahead, 2-0.

Four minutes later Christopher scored her second of the game when Melanie Arthur’s low corner kick snuck through the box and found Christopher on the far post.

An inexperienced Forest Hills team was missing starting keeper Raza Taqi, who hurt her back in a game against Bryant Apr. 29.

Bayside wasn’t the only team on the field that capitalized on defensive mistakes, as Forest Hills (3-9 Queens A) scored both of its goals on penalty kicks by Stefany Feliciano and Kamila Barnes after hand balls in the box.

The Rangers also had a few other scoring chances in the second half, but couldn’t put the ball past Bayside keeper Militza Machuca.

“In the first half we gave up some easy goals, but in the second half we played even with them,” said Forest Hills coach Bob Sprance. “We missed our chances and they made the most of theirs.”

Christopher, who is as proud of beating a severe case of asthma she developed as a freshman as she is of her hat trick, scored her third goal in the 26th minute when she tipped the ball past Cantin, who came off her line, to put Bayside ahead, 4-1.

Vanessa Dalessandro and Danielle Stanley also scored for Bayside.

“I’m happy with our ball movement today,” said Bayside coach Joe Corrado. “We have a lot of new players, but we’re starting to gel and that’s always nice this time of the season.”

Flushing 3, Far Rockaway 2. Michelle Lopez had a goal and two assists, Lourdes Minaya added a goal and an assist and Kerlly Camino scored for Flushing (3-1-3 Queens B).

Bryant 7, Jamaica 0. Cristin Alfonso Zea had three goals and one assists, Lindsey Molina netted a pair of goals and Viviana Andino and Stavrous Giannoukakis each added a goal apiece for Bryant (9-2-1 Queens A). Jamaica falls to 0-11 in Queens A.

Cardozo 5, Newcomers 1. Patricia Sotirakis scored three goals for Cardozo (10-0 Queens A) and Maria Rios scored the lone Newcomers goal. The Lions are now 2-8-1 in Queens A.

Townsend Harris 1, Jamaica 0. Jillian Caruso scored for Townsend Harris (9-2-1 Queens A).

Francis Lewis 1, Bayside 0. Natalia Cortes scored the game’s lone goal in the first half for Francis Lewis (6-3-2 Queens A).

Newcomers 4, Newtown 3. Led by Laura Burlacu, who scored two goals, Newcomers erased a 2-1 halftime deficit with three second half goals. Rebecca Aupont and Yackeli Egas also scored for the Lions. Alba Carrasquero netted a hat trick for Newtown (3-6-2 Queens A).
