Holy Family’s Bantam girls softball team of Fresh Meadows continued its winning ways with a 15-12 win over St. Mel’s. An 11-run uprising in the top of the second gave Holy Family the lead to stay, although challenged throughout the game by St. Mel’s strong hitting. Timely base hits by Holy Family’s Stephanie Restrepo and Jackie Chang each drove in two runs in the second inning. Katherine Dougherty had three hits, including a triple and a double while driving in three runs. Anniela Vaccaro also had three hits with two RBIs. Jeanna Dalvano was 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Julianne Keyes had two hits with one RBI and pitched a strong six innings to earn a complete-game victory and raise Holy Family’s record to 3-1. Julie finished the game with a fine catch, followed by a strike out to end the game. Outstanding catches in the field by Nina Chang and Stephanie Restrepo sealed the win for Holy Family.
Holy Family wins with eight runs in bottom of sixth
The Holy Family girls softball team defeated St. Joseph’s in a CYO game. Holy Family, led by the outstanding pitching performance of Katherine Dougherty, earned a come-from-behind victory to up its record to 2-1. Theresa Hernandez capped a dramatic bottom of the sixth rally with a grand slam home run and four RBIs that scored Katherine, Stephanie Restrepo and Yesenia Abreu ahead of her to give Holy Family the lead. Stephanie Restrepo’s key single kept the rally alive, setting up Theresa’s game-winning home run. Holy Family finished the sixth inning by batting around the lineup and scoring eight runs with RBIs from Christina Palumbo and two by Jackie Chang. Katherine Dougherty pitched seven strong innings with eight strikeouts to get the complete game win and also made four outstanding throws to Anniela Vaccaro to get runners at first. The 1-2-3 top of the seventh by Katherine sealed the victory for Holy Family with a final score of 12-7. Nina Yang continued her hot hitting with two hits, one RBI, two runs scored and reached base in all four at bats. Samantha Vasquez and Angela Nolan started the scoring for Holy Family in the bottom of the third, as Holy Family took a early 4-3 lead. Some great plays in the field by St. Joseph’s on line drives by Jackie Chang kept the game close until the eight-run explosion in the sixth inning.
