Could the next Tiger Woods or Annika Sorenstam be among the millions of New York youngsters who have never swung a driver? Beginning July 1, City Parks Foundation offers a fun way for children in New York to learn the basics of golf, right in their own neighborhood!
The free program, called City Parks Junior Golf Camps, utilizes 10 baseball and soccer fields throughout the five boroughs to introduce the sport to boys and girls ages 8 through 14. The Camps have been structured by the Metropolitan PGA, consist of three three-week sessions, held twice a week.
“Besides high costs, accessibility is one of the main reasons why golf has not enjoyed the same popularity with urban youth as other sports” said Mike Silverman, Director of Golf and Tennis for City Parks Foundation. “There are, after all, a lot more ballfields and basketball courts in the city than golf courses. Our goal is to introduce the game to more city kids by utilizing ballfields within their easy reach.”
The curriculum consists of beginner lessons in the essential skills of driving, pitching and putting. Those who attend regularly and who demonstrate the basic skills will be invited to play on a local golf course or driving range.
City Parks Junior Golf Camps is a program of the City Parks Foundation, a non-profit organization that enriches the lives of all New Yorkers through park-based sports, arts and educational programs.
