DG Roller Hockey: Re/Max scores five victories in DG Minor Division action

Minor Division

Re/Max 10, Flowers by Peter 6. On the suggestion by Re/Max forward Christian Kenny, this game was dedicated to head coach David Legaz, who was not behind the bench because of his attendance at the Washington D.C. Police Memorial honoring his fallen partner. Officer Brian McDonnell – Emergency Service Truck No. 1. He was one of the many heroes that gave their life while rescuing thousands at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11. This moving tribute energized Team Re/Max, with six players scoring goals. Evan Katz led with three goals, David Legaz and Mario Grdovic added two each. Re/Max goaltender Melanie Binanti was able to limit the goal scoring by Flowers by Peter to six. Travis Lippert and Albert Markopoulos led the Flowers by Peter goal scoring with two goals each.

Re/Max 6, Erin's Isle 4. After the first period ending in a 2-2 tie, Re/max defensemen James Gorga led the defensive pressure, forcing numerous turnovers and allowing David Legaz, Eric Wong and Mario Grovic to score the deciding second period goals. Evan Katz, Team Re/Max’s back-up goaltender, had an excellent game between the pipes and kept Erin’s Isle scoreless in the second period. Anthony Pagano led Erin's Isle’s scoring with two goals. Mark Dipaolo and Rick Callahan also scored a goal each.

Mass Electric 14, Re/Max 10. The David & Nancy Legaz – Re/Max Universal Team had their undefeated season come to an end in a 14-10 high scoring affair. Evan Katz of Re/Max led his team with eight goals, as did Patrick Schule of Mass Electric with nine goals. Defenseman John Gianatiempo and forward Jimmy Huynh of Re/Max made some outstanding defensive plays in the neutral zone to stop some of the Mass Electric breakouts. Forward Katie McGrory made some key passes to help Re/Max breakout of the defensive zone.

Re/Max 7, Mass Electric 6. The David & Nancy Legaz – Re/Max Universal Team rebounded from their first loss to come back and beat the same team, Mass Electric, in a heart-pounding 7-6 win. Re/Max scorers were led by Evan Katz with three goals and Jeffrey Johnston with two. David Legaz played outstanding defense and helped out with three assists and one goal. Eric Wong started the Re/Max goal scoring by taking a blocked shot and lifting over the outstretched goaltender. Re/Max Forwards Kevin Kamiadi and Christian Kenney (two assists) played great positional hockey and where able to put tremendous pressure on Mass Electric’s goaltender. Re/Max goaltender Melanie Binanti was excellent in goal and was able to limit the scoring by Mass Electric to only six.

Re/Max 12, Flowers by Peter 1. The David & Nancy Legaz – Re/Max Universal Team beat Flowers by Peter 12-1. Re/Max Forward Jimmy Huynh & Defenseman John Gianatiempo scored their first career goals. Re/Max Defenseman David Legaz scored three goals and had three assists. Re/Max Goaltender Melanie Binanti kept Flowers by Peter from blooming by allowing only one goal from Evan Kundrat who was feed a perfect pass from Travis Lippert.

Mass Electric 5, Erin’s Isle 5. Nikos Natsiolaris started the scoring with an early first-period goal for Mass Electric before N. Steliaros scored for Erin’s Isle to knot the score at 1-1 to end the first period. Mass Electric took 3-1 lead after two periods on goals by Jason Becker and Patrick Schule. In the third period, the teams traded early goals by Patrick Schule and A. Pagano before Erin’s Isle, on goals by K. Huynh, N. Stelarios and R. Callahan, took a 5-4 lead. Mass battled back to tie the contest on a goal by Patrick Schule and Joseph Favalora held off Erin’s late in the third to preserve the tie.

Senior Division

Transcreen 8, Rudy’s Bakery 7. In an exciting, well-played game, Transcreen outlasted Rudy’s Bakery. 8-7. Rudy’s scored first off the stick of Steve Whelan, assisted by Danny Cochran. Transcreen answered with two goals by Matt Novak and Willie Yumet. Steve Whelan again buried the biscuit with one minute left in the first period to tie the game at 2-2. In the second period, Rudy’s took the lead with an unassisted goal by Ed Johnston. Transcreen’s Andrew Kuhnke then tied the game, only to see Marcos Brito put Rudy’s ahead with two quick goals. Transcreen’s Matt Novak, Jimmy Raymond and Adam Akpinar scored to put Transcreen ahead for good. Danny O’Neill found the empty net with 12 seconds left in the game. Transcreen’s Keith Lippert and Keith Smith played excellent defensive games.
