Undefeated in its first three games, the St. John’s women's soccer team saw two of its players honored by the Big East Conference as senior defender Jen Taylor was named Big East Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Kaitlin Schmidt was named Big East Rookie of the Week after the Red Storm’s 1-0-2 week.
Taylor had an assist in the Red Storm’s 5-1 win over Fordham Sept. 3 and added a second half assist in a 1-1 tie with Miami (Ohio) Friday. Taylor was also named to the Miami/Adidas Invitational All-Tournament team.
Schmidt, who helped lead St. Anthony’s win the CHSAA title last year, netted the game-winner against Fordham and scored both Red Storm goals in a 2-2 tie against Evansville Sunday. She now has three goals on just four shots.
Wingert also earns Big East honors
The St. John’s women’s team wasn’t the only soccer team to earn conference praise this week.
Red Storm defender Chris Wingert, who anchored a defense which pitched two shutouts in the St. John’s Classic and also scored the game-winning goal in St. John’s shocking 3-0 win over Indiana Saturday night, was named Big East co-Defensive Player of the Week.
The Red Storm, who fell to No. 15 in the national polls following a season-opening 2-1 loss loss, jumped back up to No. 3 after beating Florida International and Indiana to win the St. John’s Classic at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point.
DeVore named MAAC Rookie of the Week
Not only did Mike DeVore tie a St. John’s record and broke a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference mark with four interceptions in his collegiate debut, helping lead St. John’s to a 17-14 overtime win over Canisius Saturday, but the junior cornerback also earned the conference's Rookie of the Week honors.
DeVore also broke up seven passes, had three tackles and made the game-clinching interception in overtime.
Men’s Soccer
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 6, York College 0. Sophomore forward Everet Lindholm netted a hat trick for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Saturday afternoon’s rout in Kings Point. Joe Meagher Mike McGovern and Anthony Casey also scored for the Mariners (3-1).
Former Molloy standout James Papazis, who made one save, shared the shutout with Jarred Schwandt and Aaron Kleinerman. Damion Bhoorasingh had 11 saves for York in their season opener.
