The Queens Kiwanis Baseball League completed the 2002 season in late August with three new Champions.
In the Senior Division (ages 17 through 19) the Jackie Robinson United team took two-of-three from the Latin Souls Dodgers in the finale.
In the Junior Division (15 and 16) Starrett City collected it first title topping the Briarwood Bulldogs in the best-of-three final round.
The Met Division saw another new winner, as the Mighty Ducks, of Ridgewood and Bushwick, swept the Latin Souls Angels.
The championship rounds were preceded by numerous tournaments in July and August. The Queens Kiwanis 15 and 16s Juniors won the Greater New York Sandlot Baseball Alliance Frank Tempone Memorial Tournament, while Kiwanis teams reached the finals of two other finals tournament, the PONY League playoffs and the RBI Eastern Regional in Trenton, NJ.
The QKSA Invitational at St. John’s University was won by the Latin Souls Senior team, while an outside squad from Jackie Robinson grabbed the 15 and 16 top prize.
Kiwanis also had a very successful All-Star Tripleheader at St. John’s, where more than 100 young men and two young women displayed their skills. Also, four of the league’s Seniors competed in the GNYSBA All-Star game at Shea Stadium.
