The City Council has reached a proposed settlement with the Pathmark store in Springfield Gardens on funds the supermarket agreed to give to the community when it opened in 2000, said a spokeswoman for Councilman James Sanders, Jr. (D-Laurelton).
The money was a stipulation made by the Council in 1995 in exchange for approving the zoning variance the store needed to open at the corner of Springfield and Merrick boulevards. The council bill, passed over then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s veto, required Pathmark to pay $400,000 over 20 years to help local businesses offset potential revenue loss from the supermarket and drugstore, but the fund was never started.
Although no details on the proposed settlement were available at press time, Sanders scheduled a public meeting to discuss the agreement. The meeting was slated for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Laurelton Branch of the Queens Borough Public Library at 134-26 225th St. For more information call 527-4356.
