The Queens College men’s basketball team’s snide has reached four games following the Knights’ 76-72 loss to C.W. Post at Fitzgerald Gymnasium Saturday night.
Without leading scorers John Sikiric and Gary DeBerry, each sidelined with injuries, Queens (6-5, 4-4 New York Collegiate Athletic Conference) continues to struggle to find leadership.
Against the Pioneers, freshman Lance Hazel stepped up, as the former Bayside standout scored a career-high 21 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and had 3 steals and 3 assists. But the Jamaica native also had 6 of the Knights’ 22 turnovers.
Former Franklin K. Lane star Robert Villanueva had 11 points and 8 rebounds and Alex McLean added 10 points and 6 boards for undermanned Queens, which plays at New York Tech Saturday at 4:30 p.m. after hosting Concordia Thursday and playing at Dowling Tuesday.
Reuben Statam had 21 points and Ryan Bucci added 19 points and 4 assists for C.W. Post (7-3, 7-1).
In a 76-59 loss at Adelphi last Thursday, Shaun Bertin had 14 points and Hazel added 10 points and 4 boards. Wayne Nelson led Adelphi (4-5, 4-3) with 23 points and 4 rebounds.
While the men’s team is struggling, the Queens College women’s team won its fourth game out of its last five games by defeating C.W. Post 52-40 Saturday at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
Christ the King grad Amy Mulligan led Queens (5-6, 4-4 NYCAC) with 11 points and 12 rebounds off the bench. Erin Dollard added 10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists and freshman guard Erin White had 6 points and 10 boards.
Danielle Heffel had 12 points and 12 rebounds for C.W. Post, which fell to 4-5, 4-4.
Last Thursday, the Lady Knights dropped a 77-71 overtime decision to defending NYCAC champs Adelphi. Dollard had 17 points and Kerri Graham added 10 points for Queens, while former Christ the King standout Melanie Mangone scored a game-high 27 points and Jamie Douglas added 18 for Adelphi (5-5, 4-3).
Yorke leads red-hot Queensborough
Johnann York, a 6-foot-4 sophomore forward from the West Indies, was named CUNY Community College Player of the Week after leading the Queensborough men’s basketball team to its fourth win in a row, an 84-48 romp over Bronx Community College Jan. 7.
One of five Tigers averaging in double figure scoring, Yorke scored a game-high 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting, grabbed 14 rebounds and had five blocks.
While Yorke stood out, it was Queensborough’s defense that won them the game. The Broncos were held to 13 points in the first half and had all kinds of trouble handling the Tigers’ press.
Carl Emengo scored 13 points and pulled down 8 rebounds while teammate Malik Frazier, who is fourth in the league in scoring, chipped in with 11 of his 15 points in the second half for Queensborough, which rebounded from a 1-5 start to even its record at 5-5.
Casey Gordon found his shooting touch and scored 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half, but Bronx never came close to taking a lead.
