So how do you top a 13-point, 17-rebound performance? If you’re Maria Loor on the Newtown girls’ basketball team you score 30 points, grab 24 boards and score the winning layup with three seconds left in the fourth quarter to lift the Pioneers to a 61-60 win over Robert F. Wagner Friday.
Ally Zarate dished the ball to Loor, who scored 13 points in the fourth quarter for Newtown (15-7, 12-3 Queens III-B), which trailed 45-36 after three quarters.
And without leading scorer Monica Pahl, who scored 10 points including her 1,000th career point but fouled out at the end of the third quarter, Loor’s offensive explosion was especially huge.
“I thought we were in bad shape at that point, but Maria started to pick it up and took over the game,” Newtown coach Bob Kunkel said. “She did a great job. It was incredible to watch her at the end of the game.”
Loor’s 13-point, 17-rebound outing came in a 60-41 win over American Studies Thursday. In that victory Pahl added 26 points.
East Islip 65, Cardozo 46. Britni Bolden had 13 points and Marissa Flagg added 14 points in the Clyde Frazier Jr. Slam Jam Memorial Saturday at Holy Cross High School. Junior Giuliana Caen had a career-high 16 points, 12 rebounds and 7 blocks for East Islip.
Bayside 112, American Studies 20. Gayle Silverstein had 28 points for Bayside (20-3, 15-0 Queens B-III), which finished undefeated in the league for the second consecutive season.
Francis Lewis 85, August Martin 54. Dawn Coleman came off the bench and contributed 24 points and 7 rebounds, and Maria Miaoulis had 12 points and 3 steals for Francis Lewis (23-1, 14-0 Queens A). August Martin dropped to 11-3 in the league.
Forest Hills 34, Renaissance 23. Katie Gilbert (14 points, 13 rebounds) and Albana Gega (10 points, 14 rebounds) each had double-doubles and Jackie Butler added 7 assists for Forest Hills (19-4, 13-2 Queens II-B).
Bowne 58, Cleveland 30. Chantal Biscette had 10 points and 15 rebounds for Bowne (17-4, 14-1 Queens II-B), which clinched the division title.
Van Buren 56, Long Island City 31. Jeneva Kelly scored 19 points for Van Buren (17-6, 10-4 Queens III-B).
Springfield Gardens 62, Flushing 28. Diana Frank scored 22 points for Springfield (11-13) in a non-league win.
Bayside 55, Flushing 30. Silverstein had 14 points, Allie Falco added 11 and Leyla Sak netted 10 for the Commodores.
John Adams 34, Beach Channel 33. Dinorah Diaz had 15 points and Nicola Moore added 10 for Adams (14-10), which led the whole game.
Cardozo 48, Long Island City 30. Bolden had 18 points and 7 rebounds and Denise Fath scored 16 points for the Judges in a non-league win.
Townsend Harris 41, Van Buren 28. Andi Strauss had 14 points and Katie Driscoll added 11 for Townsend Harris (11-9) in a non-league game.
