To the Point: Poppenhusen to offer country line dancing

Welcome to the Point. The Point being College Point. I hope that each and every one of you celebrated a very happy New Year which will continue throughout the year.

Condolences to the family of Joseph Marsala. Joe was a longtime member of the College Point Ambulance Corp. He will be remembered in our prayers.

Dates and fees for the historic bus rides to Fort Totten and the Bayside Historical Society at the historic officer’s club, as well as to Richardtown Restoration Village on Staten Island, will appear in the next issue.

Upcoming Poppenhusen events include country line dancing on Monday evenings, 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

It’s great fun and good exercise. Go and make new friends. No leather boots, soft-soled shoes only. Donations $6. Dance instruction and music by Ira & Ellen. Sober lunch AA meeting — a closed meeting — will be Wednesday, noon to 1 p.m.

There will be free drama classes for teens between 13 years old and 17 years old. These free Poppenhusen programs help to develop self-confidence, improve speaking skills and provide instruction in various acting skills.

The Monday class for younger teens is filled, but you can call to be put on a waiting list. Tuesday, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. with instructor Frank Priore.

The following are good ways to put you on the road to better health: Tai Chi (Tae Ki Do) classes will be Mondays and Fridays, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., kickboxing classes will be Mondays and Fridays, 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., Karate (Tae Kwon Do) classes will be Mondays and Fridays, 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., Yoga classes for adults will be Fridays, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. with Sensei Ed Tammany, 3rd Dan Tae Kwon Do, 2nd Dan Tae Ki Do – $10 per class.

Earn a master’s degree in theology, days/evenings: The Seminary of the Immaculate Conception offers a this program as well as post-master’s advanced certificates in spirituality, pastoral liturgy and pastoral ministry. Courses are designed for people with an undergraduate degree who wish to pursue a master’s in theology to help them prepare for ministry in the church.

Retreat for single women will be Jan. 31 through Feb. 2 at Mount Manresa in Staten Island. Cost: $125. For details call Sr. Dean 516-741-0718.

Jan. 26 is the Lunar New Year Celebration, with music, dancing, face-painting, calligraphy and more. The festivities begin at 2 p.m., $11 at the Colden Auditorium.

Sabina says…We had a great time with my family and of course my grandsons Eric and Brian were on the honor roll and just loved their hockey and skating.
