LAURELTON — An off-duty corrections officer failed to catch two men he found breaking into his car Tuesday, police said.
The officer saw two men in their 20s attempting to steal his car in front of 142-35 231st St. shortly before 3 a.m., police said.
He tried to apprehend the men, getting into a physical struggle with one as the other fled on foot, police said.
The officer discharged one round from his gun during the struggle, which did not hit anyone, before the second man also managed to flee, police said.
The corrections officer was not injured, authorities said.
No arrests were made and the investigation was ongoing.
Flushing man arrested on assault charges
FLUSHING — A Flushing man was arrested for allegedly stabbing two men Jan. 29 in an assault that left one of them in critical condition, police said.
Avinash Bindra, 27, of 48-18 College Point Blvd., faces charges of assault and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with a dispute police say happened around 4:15 p.m. at College Point Boulevard and 41st Avenue.
Bindra allegedly stabbed an 80-year-old man multiple times in the torso and once in the head, and left a 43-year-old man with a head laceration, police said.
Both victims were rushed to New York Hospital Medical Center Queens, where the elderly man was listed in critical condition and the other man was stable, police said.
Cops recovered a knife at the scene, police said.
Two arrested in Fresh Meadows robberies
FRESH MEADOWS — Two South Jamaica men were arrested Monday in connection with a pair of robbery patterns concentrated in the 107th Precinct through January, police said.
Vladimir Acra, 18, of 150-29 122nd Ave., and Kairef Gordon, 18, of 114-07 159th St., have been charged with robbery and criminal possession of a weapon in eight street muggings in which they brandished a gun and ran off with cash, police said.
All but one of the robberies took place in the 107th Precinct, which is based in Fresh Meadows, police said.
Homeless man accused in Queens bank robberies
NEW JERSEY — A homeless man was arrested in New Jersey Saturday in connection with an extensive pattern of bank robberies in Queens and Brooklyn, police said.
Richard Johnson, 47, was arrested at 9:15 a.m. at 227 East Front St. in Plainfield, N.J. by members of the NYPD’s Major Case Squad and local police officers, authorities said.
Johnson is accused of carrying out a total of 12 bank robberies in Brooklyn and Queens between November and January, police said.
Whitestone CVS burglarized, medications, cash stolen
WHITESTONE — Thousands of dollars worth of cash and drugs were stolen from a CVS pharmacy in an early-morning break-in last week, police said.
Intruders forced their way through a side door of the pharmacy at 20-21 Francis Lewis Blvd. around 8:35 a.m. Jan. 29, removing about $8,000 in cash and some prescription medications, police said.
The manager discovered the break-in when he arrived for work, police said.
No arrests have been made in the ongoing investigation.
Residents staged three protests against the arrival of the very same pharmacy last year because the CVS replaced a food market.
Man found dead in water in Beechhurst
BEECHHURST — A 60-year-old man was found dead floating in the water at 154-19 Riverside Dr. at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday, police said.
The medical examiner was to determine the cause of death, police said. The investigation was ongoing.
Suspect busted in Richmond Hill robberies
RICHMOND HILL — Police arrested a suspect Jan. 29 in connection with two subway station robberies last year, police said.
Edward Bailey, 21, allegedly held up a 47-year-old woman by gunpoint in the stairwell of the 121st Street and Jamaica Avenue subway station on Nov. 13 around 11:45 a.m., fleeing with $30, police said.
Cops believe he struck again only a week later, robbing a 40-year-old man of $1,600 cash at the same location around 1:15 p.m. Nov. 22, police said.
He was charged with robbery, police said.
St. Albans boy, 13, dies from heart attack
ST. ALBANS — A 13-year-old boy died Tuesday after suffering from cardiac arrest, police said.
Police responded to an emergency call at 191-11 Linden Blvd. at 2:25 p.m., where they found the teenage boy in cardiac arrest, authorities said.
The boy was rushed to Mary Immaculate Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:23 p.m., police said.
The investigation was continuing.
Suspect arrested in Hollis apartment break-in
HOLLIS — An Albany man was arrested for allegedly breaking into a woman’s apartment Jan. 29, police said.
William Edwards, 29, allegedly knocked on the door and forced his way inside a 45-year-old woman’s apartment at 190-46 99th Ave. around 11 a.m., grabbing cash before he fled, police said.
He was arrested without incident after a canvas of the area, police said.
Woman critically injured in St. Albans house fire
ST. ALBANS — An elderly woman was listed in critical condition following a house fire Monday, police said.
Police and fire units responded to the blaze at 173-19 111th Ave. at 3:27 p.m., where they found an 80-year-old woman inside, authorities said.
She was rushed to Cornell Burn Center, where she was listed in critical condition, police said.
Suspect attempts robbery of Queens Village bank
QUEENS VILLAGE — A would-be bank robber fled without any money Monday, police said.
The man entered the Citibank at 217-10 Jamaica Ave. around 3:30 p.m. and passed a demand note to the teller, police said.
But he then ran out without taking any money, police said.
No arrests have been made. The investigation was ongoing.
2 Bronx teens arrested at LIC station after alleged slashing
LONG ISLAND CITY — Two teens from the Bronx were arrested Friday at the Queensboro Plaza subway station for allegedly slashing someone on the train platform in Manhattan, police said.
Cops believe Edward Cruz, 16, and Stanlie Jamalie, 17, both of the Bronx, got into a dispute with a 17-year-old male on the northbound platform of the N train at 34th Street and 6th Avenue around 8 p.m. Friday, police said.
The two teens allegedly punched the victim with their fists and slashed him with a razor before boarding an N train to Queensboro Plaza, where police were waiting to arrest them, authorities said.
The victim was treated and released from an area hospital, police said.
Woman recants report of rape in Woodside
WOODSIDE — A woman who told police she had been raped by an unknown man later recanted the story, although an assault appears to have taken place, police said.
The 18-year-old woman told police that around 2 p.m. on Jan. 29 an unidentified knife-wielding man approached her near 69th Street and Roosevelt Avenue, taking her to an unknown building where he raped her, police said. She was treated at Elmhurst Hospital.
But the woman later recanted the story about the rape, said police, who indicated that she knew the suspect and that he assaulted her.
The investigation was ongoing.
Man found stabbed at Astoria corner dies from wounds
ASTORIA — A 20-year-old man died early Tuesday morning after he was discovered on a street corner with multiple stab wounds, police said.
Police found the man at 8th Street and Astoria Boulevard about 3:45 a.m. when they responded to reports of a stabbing, cops said.
The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital Queens, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
Police said they had no suspects in the killing and the motive was unknown. The investigation was ongoing.
Baby with high fever dies at Elmhurst Hospital
EAST ELMHURST — A 7-month-old baby died Monday after her parents rushed her to Elmhurst Hospital Center with a high fever, police said.
The parents, who live at 23rd Avenue near 87th Street, brought the baby to the hospital at 7:30 p.m., and she was pronounced dead 15 minutes later, police said.
The medical examiner was to determine the cause of death of the baby, police said.
Man fatally shot in Seaside while getting into his car
SEASIDE — A man was shot dead as he was entering his car shortly past midnight Sunday, police said.
Two men stepped out of a white Monte Carlo and shot the 33-year-old victim in the head as he was getting into his car at the corner of Beach Channel Drive and Beach 100th Street around 1 a.m. Sunday, police said.
The victim was rushed to Peninsula General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
No arrests were made, and the investigation was ongoing.
Astoria school teacher arrested on assault charges
ASTORIA — A city school teacher was arrested Friday for an alleged domestic assault, police said.
Shaniqual Edwards, a teacher at IS 126 on 21st Street in Astoria, was arrested on assault charges at 4:30 p.m. Friday, authorities said.
