The 11-year-old Whitestone Wanderers beat Douglaston, 20-9, in an exhibition game Sunday. The boys blew open what was a close game with six runs in the sixth inning and six more in the seventh.
John Massa crushed a three-run homer over the right field fence and banged a single off the center field fence. Massa also walked twice and had 5 RBIs .Vincent Florido also had 5 RBIs on four hits, including a double. Mike Lowrey had three hits, Nick Zavattieri had two hits, three walks and 2 RBIs, Mike Dinoto had a triple that knocked in two runs, Anthony Polito had a hit, two walks and two RBIs and Johnny Liquori was 1-for-1 with three walks.
Greg Polkowski pitched the first two innings and struck out three batters while holding Douglaston scoreless. John Massa pitched a 1-2-3 seventh .
Tough luck: After being robbed for hits twice, Brandon Rosenthal was hit by a pitch .
He’s 2 fast: Lead-off hitter Nick Lamonica opened the game with a walk, then stole second and third on the next two pitches, prompting the Douglaston manager to ask that there be no more stealing .
Hustle: George Zorrilla scored from second on a ground out to the pitcher.
Practice will be held every Tuesday and Thursday at 3:30 p.m. for both the 11 and 12-year olds at Golden 24 if it’s dry, PS 193 if it isn’t.
