Nick Derba had a pretty good week. The all-star catcher for the Archbishop Molloy Stanners called two shutouts, a crucial 6-0 win over St. Francis Prep Friday and an 18-0 blowout of St. Edmund Prep, as the Stanners locked up first place in the Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan standings.

The backstop for the defending CHSAA city champs had a decent week at the plate as well, belting a home run with RBIs against the Terriers as well as a round-tripper and two more RBIs in a 4-1 win over Monsignor McClancy.

“I think he’s having a great season,” Molloy coach Jack Curran said. “He’s an outstanding individual.”

Derba is batting just around .400 with four home runs on the season and is also a star in the classroom, where he holds a 95 average. He will attend Manhattan College in the fall on a full academic scholarship.

St. Francis Prep’s Mark Burik had a home run and 4 RBIs in a 10-5 win over McClancy Monday … Senior pitcher Kevin Conlin fanned 12 for McClancy in an 8-4 win over Christ the King … Robert Boland tossed a three-hitter to lead the CK Royals over Holy Cross, 7-1 … Kristen Connor had a three-RBI triple to help Molloy upset Mary Louis in a tie-breaking game Monday … Cardozo’s Bernie Estevez hit a pair of home runs in wins over Francis Lewis and Bushwick this week … John Adams senior Johnny Lluberes tossed a no-hitter in a 4-1 win over Grover Cleveland and went 3-for-3 with three runs scored in a 13-0 rout of Thomas Edison … Junior Ramirez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh and struck out eight for Newtown in a 7-6 win over Aviation … Ronny Vargas tossed a two-hit complete-game shutout, striking out 15 for Aviation in a 10-0 win over John Bowne … Alba Carrasquero scored three goals for the Newtown girls’ soccer team in a 4-1 win over Richmond Hill … Dayna Navatta went 4-for-5 and hit a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning for the Bayside softball team in a 5-4 win over Francis Lewis.
