Roller Hockey Minor Division
Flowers by Peter 5, Mass Electric 0. Flowers by Peter defeated Mass Electric, 5-0. The shutout was the first for goalie Thomas Bellismo, who played a fantastic game from the first save to the last. Matt Malo played a strong two-way game with two assists.
Joe Tully netted a hat trick and Ken Tomlinson contributed a goal. Tomlinson also played well while his team was shorthanded for six minutes in the third period. Joseph Favalora showed how much he improved over the season and added a goal. Also contributing to the win were Joseph Tomlinson, Alexi Malo, Frank Gazio and John Vioklis.
Flowers by Peter 6, Mass Electric 5. Joe Tully scored the game-winner with 1:03 left in the game and ended the matchup with four goals. Kenneth Tomlinson was steady on both sides of the rink, and Alexi Malo, in addition to scoring a goal and assisting on two others, was strong in the face-off circles. Matt Malo played a solid defensive game and Thomas Bellismo made big saves with the game on the line.
Flowers by Peter 4, Erin’s Isle 3. Erin’s Isle wasted no time in taking a 3-0 lead in the first 14 minutes of the game; however, Flowers by Peter regrouped and scored the next four goals to take the win.
Flowers’ defense was led by Matt Malo and Frankie Gazio. Alexi Malo and Joe Tully scored goals, and John Sakolos and Joseph Favalora had strong games. Billy Chaklis contributed a solid game and was awarded the game puck.
Baseball Major Division
Graziano Ravioli captures playoff win
After dominating the regular season (11-1), the Graziano Ravioli team was led by rookie coach Eric Silvestri to a come-from-behind victory to kick off the playoffs. Chris Cacioppo, who averaged more than 2.5 strikeouts per inning, was dominating as expected this season.
Also an important key to the team’s success was the performance of Daniel Santeufemia on the mound. Andrew Silvestri, Nico Cusumano, Stephen Foley and Anthony Romano provided other important contributions.
Whitestone Renegades Junior Division
Mitchell Linden Cobras 8-9, Whitestone Renegades 6-10. Coming in with a record of 2-0, the junior Renegades were up against local rivals, the Mitchell Linden Cobras, at Flushing High School Field. After losing the first game, 8-6, of a doubleheader in a nail-biter, the Renegades quickly fell behind in the first inning of the second game.
Whitestone Renegade starter, Mike Perrone, allowed nine runs in 4.2 innings, six of which were unearned. In the final 2.1 innings, Coach Silvestri Jr. went to Matthew Santeufemia, who posted five strikeouts and did not give up any runs.
Trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, rightfielder Jonathan Thomas led off with a triple over the centerfielder’s head for a huge clutch hit. Chris Farrell then followed with a base hit to tie the game, and Mike Perrone delivered the game-winning hit.
Unlimited Division
Still undefeated, the 12-0 Renegades faced the Titan’s ace and found themselves trailing 4-0 in the top of the first inning. The Renegades chipped away at the lead with an RBI double off the center-field fence by shortstop Eric Silvestri. Whitestone tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.
After a scoreless top of the seventh inning, Whitestone centerfielder Joey Taranto’s game-winning hit ended the game in the bottom of the seventh, preserving the Renegades flawless season.
