St. Margaret’s edges OLS in Diocesan playoffs, 10-8

The Our Lady of the Snows fourth-grade girls’ softball team was dealt a serious blow just prior to the team’s semifinal game against St. Margaret’s in the diocesan playoffs after learning that starting pitcher Rita Romeo had broken her arm

The Snows team, however, did not fold. Champions of their section heading into the game, the girls kept coming back against a determined St. Margaret’s team, but could not get over the top, losing, 10-8.

St. Margaret's jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but Snows refused to go quietly, chipping away at the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. St. Margaret’s responded by scoring three in the fourth and two in the fifth to make the score 10-3.

Kaitlin Smolen came on to pitch for Snows and kept the team in the game, giving the OLS offense a chance to ignite. Snows scored three in the bottom of the fifth inning and two more in the bottom of the sixth inning, making the score 10-8.

In the bottom of the seventh and final inning with the tying run at the plate, the Snows girls rally came up short and ended a terrific season.

The offense for OLS was lead by Julia Hannigan and Shannon Vetack, who each had two hits, Coutney Gratzer delivered a huge two-run home run and Kaitlyn Biscotti, Sara Correa and Alexa Losita all singled.
