Nesime Bal Sr. GK Francis Lewis
One glance at Bal’s statistics is all you need to see her steady improvement. As a sophomore, Bal made 36 saves and allowed 26 goals in seven games. In her junior year, Bal nearly tripled her saves made (93) while lowering her goals against to 12 in 12 games. As a senior, Bal quietly excelled, stopping 121 shots while allowing 0.57 goals per game.
Diana Thomas Sr. Def. Cardozo
As good a defender as there is in the PSAL, Thomas was the rock on the Judges’ backline, sacrificing the chance to go forward and create scoring chances on many occasions. An absolute bulldog, the hard-nosed and versatile defender is a two-time TimesLedger All-Queens First Team selection and will attend St. John’s, where she hopes to walk on to the much-improved Red Storm.
Vanessa D’Alessandro Jr. Def. Bayside
Although D’Alessandro lacks some of the experience of others on the first team who have spent years playing club soccer, one wouldn’t know it by watching her play. A year after playing defensive midfield, Bayside coach Joe Corrado moved D’Alessandro to stopper this year and what she may have lacked in height, she more than made up for in heart. “She won every 50/50 ball and was tough as nails,” Corrado said.
Carolyn Durniak Sr. Def. Cardozo
Although teammates often garnered much of the praise for their crafty play through midfield or their ability to put the ball in the net, the unassuming Durniak was as much a reason for the Judges’ fantastic season. Heading to Northeastern in the fall, Durniak also scored 10 goals and added three assists this season while spending some time in the midfield.
Eleni Petropoulos Sr. Def. Bryant
The heart and soul of Bryant soccer, Petropoulos only knows how to play soccer one way — hard. The aggressive co-captain anchored a steady Bryant defense that allowed an average of 1.47 goals per game. The three-year starter will play for former Lady Riders head coach Emma Hayes at Iona next year.
Kamila Barnes Sr. Mid. Forest Hills
As the free kick specialist, Barnes’ position on the field often depended on the game’s scenario. The versatile two-sport star scored 18 goals, most off of her patented free kicks, and added seven assists while also dropping back on defense to help secure victories for her team. Barnes will attend Binghamton in the fall to study nursing.
Patricia Sotirakis Sr. Mid. Cardozo
One of the top three players in the borough, Sotirakis excelled despite constantly drawing the opposition’s attention. The tri-captain and two-time TimesLedger All-Queens first team midfielder led the Judges with 19 goals and a city-best 21 assists as Cardozo advanced to the PSAL quarterfinals before falling to Midwood. The playmaking member of the Honor Roll will attend Albany in the fall.
Maura Torres Sr. Mid. John Adams
Although John Adams struggled in its first year in the ‘A’ Division, Torres continued to find the back of the net for the 2-14 Spartans. The senior midfielder scored 10 of her team’s 17 goals, including seven in a pair of 6-0 wins over Flushing. Torres, a four-sport standout, will join Newtown striker Alba Carrasquero at Bryant and Stratton, a Syracuse-based Division I junior college.
Lindsey Molina Jr. Mid. Bryant
As co-captain, Molina lets Petropoulos do the talking while she leads by example. And more often than not, the best example for Molina was by putting the ball in the back of the net. The junior striker scored a team-high 22 goals and added eight assists, good for eighth in the city — and third overall in the ‘A’ Division — in scoring with 52 points.
Kathryn Dubowkski Jr. Fwd. Townsend Harris
With injuries limiting Jackie Miccio’s time, Dubowski was again called on to fill the void for Townsend Harris and for a second straight year the speedy striker excelled. Along with Carrasquero, the two-time TimesLedger All-Queens forward who is also a cross country standout led the ‘A’ Division in goals and was also first in points with 61.
Alba Carrasquero Sr. Fwd. Newtown
Carrasquero solidified her place as one of the top goal scorers in the history of the PSAL when she finished her senior season with 23 goals — tied with Dubowski for fourth in the city — and a whopping total of 97 league goals in four years at Newtown. The two-time TimesLedger All-Queens first team striker will take her scoring prowess to Bryant and Stratton, an upstate Division I junior college, in the fall.
