114th Pct. house in Astoria evacuated after bomb scare

By Matthew Monks

The 114th Precinct in Astoria was evacuated for more than an hour on March 17 after garbage collectors reported they may have collected suspicious material nearby, police said.

Police closed Astoria Boulevard and 34th Street near the station after sanitation workers collected possible terrorist-related trash about 9:30 a.m. in front of a Pakistani man’s home on 36th Street, the New York Post reported.

The material, including books on aircraft and electronic circuitry, was printed in English and Farsi, the language used in Iran.

The collectors brought the trash to the precinct, where officers analyzed it with a radiation detector. They evacuated the station house for about an hour after getting a disturbing reading, The Post reported.

The station was reopened after the material was deemed safe, police said.
