On Saturday, April 10, the Queens Historical Society will offer a guided walk from Manhattan across the Queensboro Bridge into Long Island City. The walking tour will begin at 1 p.m. beside the Roosevelt Island Tramway station at Second Avenue and 60th St
“The bridge affords a spectacular perspective on the midtown skyline as well as an overview of much of the Long Island City waterfront,” said Urban Geographer Jack Eichenbaum, the tour’s leader.
Once in Queens, the tour includes Long Island City landmarks as well as the rapidly evolving shoreline where railroads and industries developed before the Civil War. The tour will explore Courthouse Square, with its impressive 1904 Beaux-Arts courthouse; the Hunter’s Point Historic District, with its row houses of diverse architectural styles completed between 1871 and 1890; and Gantry Plaza State Park, where the former ferry docks and gantries offer excellent views of the East River and midtown Manhattan.
The tour is approximately three miles and the fee is $12 per person. Advance reservations are not necessary. Heavy rain would cancel the tour.
