A Kew Gardens Hills bank teller was charged with stealing $190,000 from the HSBC where she worked for the past five years, District Attorney Richard Brown said Monday.
Omadevi Balkishun, 28, of 148-32 87th Rd. in Jamaica, was a teller at the Kew Gardens Hills branch of the bank on Aguilar Avenue where she allegedly stole thousands of dollars from depositors, the district attorney said.
She was arrested on charges of grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property and faces up to 15 years in prison, according to the district attorney's office. She was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court on May 5.
“According to the charges, the defendant, a teller, has admitted taking the money from the bank's night deposits and keeping it at her residence,” Brown said. “The defendant has betrayed the trust of the bank's depositors and her employer.”
The manager at the Kew Gardens Hills HSBC discovered an irregularity in a depositor's account and became suspicious, the district attorney said.
Balkishun admitted to stealing the money, which was later discovered in her house, the DA said.
The teller's bail was set at $10,000 by Judge Robert Raciti and her return court date is May 20.
