SHEA STADIUM — A New Jersey man has become the first person to be charged under a new city law that stiffens penalties for people who interrupt sporting events after he allegedly rushed onto the field at Shea Stadium and ran around the field during a New York Mets-San Francisco Giants game last week, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
John McCarthy, 38, of Totowa, N.J., faces up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $5,000, Brown said. The legislation, which raises potential jail time from 90 days to one year, was sponsored by a number of Queens legislators including Council members Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Astoria), Joseph Addabbo Jr. (D-Howard Beach), Leroy Comrie (D-St. Albans), James Gennaro (D-Fresh Meadows), Melinda Katz (D-Forest Hills), John Liu (D-Flushing), James Sanders Jr. (D-Laurelton) and David Weprin (D-Hollis).
