The first annual Bayside Little League Memorial Weekend Tournament was held at Valle East Field in Crocheron Park this past weekend.
The event brought in six teams (Levittown West, New Hyde Park, Manhattan CYO, St. Kevin’s CYO, Bayside 11s and Bayside 10s) for the four-day competition.
In the championship final Sunday evening, Levittown West defeated the Bayside 11s to capture the inaugural title.
The Bayside 11s (nicknamed The Red Devils) opened the tournament last Thursday with a 6-5 win over New Hyde Park.
Joey Pravata was the hitting star going 2-for-2 while turning in a strong pitching performance. Sandy Tomasik’s triple highlighted thE offensive attack along with the speed and defense of centerfielder Nick Palermo.
In round two, the Bayside 11s met Levittown West and played their best game of the tournament in a 13-1 victory. Tom Karcinski, Jordan Colflesh and Pravata combined for the win on the mound but the bats were the real story.
Catcher Anthony Scianna started things off with a double down the left field line and the hit parade continued as Frankie Biordi, John Paul Koulotouros, Ryan Paccione and Dominic Formato (2-for-2) supplied the power needed for the victory.
After a hard-fought 5-1 victory over a pesky Manhattan CYO team with strong pitching from Ryan Magee and key contributions from Frankie Mongelli (two hits), Anthony Witschel and Devin Ferranti, the Bayside 11s (3-0) found themselves atop the leader board as the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
Their first playoff opponent would be against fourth-seeded New Hyde Park. In a nail-biting affair, the Bayside 11s hung on for a 3-2 victory after New Hyde Park scored two runs in the sixth inning to make things interesting.
Pravata turned in another fine outing pitching all six innings to earn the win. John Aponte won the game with his key RBI in the fifth to extend the lead to 3-0 and Tomasik made a key catch in left field to preserve the win.
It was on to the championship final. Second-seeded Levittown West would win the other semifinal game over No. 3 Manhattan CYO by a score of 7-2. The championship would be a rematch of the two top seeds but Levittown West scored six runs in the first two innings in route to a 12-0 victory over the Bayside 11s
Highlights from the tournament includes Bayside 10s Christian Cruz striking out 10 batters against Manhattan CYO in a 7-6 loss in one of the best games of the tournament. The Bayside 10s represented themselves well under coach Bob Klein playing up and sill staying competitive.
Also, Manhattan’s little spark-plug Elias Wacht made stellar play after play at second base to lead his team to the playoffs.
Money raised from the tournament will allow The Bayside 11s, coached by Mike Karcinski, Dominic Scianna and Ben Biordi, to travel to Chicago over the Fourth of July Weekend to play in the CABA Illinois Regional Championships in Lynwood, Illinois.
