Now that Father’s Day has gone and the schools have held their graduations and closed for summer recess, we hope that the fathers as well as the mothers will cooperate in making summer recess recreational, functional and loving. These days cannot be duplicated, so everyone should think of safety.
Everyone was invited to attend Father Ronald M. D’Antonio’s 12:30 p.m. farewell Mass June 20. He graciously served 12 years at St. Fidelis Church in College Point. He will be taking residence at St. Athanasius in Brooklyn. I am sure he will continue his good work and see his mother and sister and perhaps get another dog. He was completely enthralled with his animals and took very good care of them. May you continue to be blessed with your wonderful work.
St. Francis Prep girls’ varsity tennis team from Fresh Meadows captured the 2004 Mayor’s Cup All Scholastic Tennis Tournament sponsored by the N.Y. Junior Tennis League. It was the team’s fifth consecutive title coached by John Brennan.
Under the sponsorship of the First Reformed Church since 1914, Boy Scouts Troop 20 and the parents of Eagle Scouts Joseph Helmut Augstein and William Chu Hom cordially invited guests for the special ceremony for the Eagle Scout award at an Eagle Court of Honor. Augstein started on Aug. 11, 2002 and William Chu Hom started on June 9, 2002.
After presentation of the U.S. flag, troop flag, Pledge of Allegiance and Scout Oath, the Order of the Arrow made a wonderful presentation. The invocation was made by Pastor Linda Burlew; the Perspective on Scouting by John Carmichael; the Eagle History by Robert Greco; the Steps Towards Eagle by Eagle Scout Robert Carmichael; and the Oyster and the Eagle by Brian Mackay. Marcos Martinez presented the awards and parents’ pins.
The guest speakers were state Sen. Frank Padavan and Scott Wolff for Assemblywoman Nettie Mayersohn, as well as Eagle Scout Rick Abbadessa Jr. Other guest speakers and presenters included George Lenz, master of Anchor-Astoria Masonic Lodge; Rocco Cardali, past grand knight of St. Ambrose Knights of Columbus, Council 1463; Herbert Brown, district commissioner of Oscar Ammon Post 853; Frank Feeley of the American Legion; Bob Maeurer Sr., Queens Federation of Churches; Robert Greco, Matinecock chapter chief; Karl Nagasawa, Poppenhusen Institute; and Jim Reilly, VFW.
Parents Friedhelm and Barbara Augstein and David and Frances Hom spoke about their sons. Colors were retired and dessert was served.
Despina Siolas of Bayside was the keynote alumni speaker at the 134th commencement exercises of the class of 2004 of St. John’s University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She was one of 20 national recipients of the 2004 American Medical Association and Pfizer Foundation Leadership Award.
Poppenhusen Institute’s free summer park concerts at MacNeil Park on 5th Avenue and College Place will be on Sundays at 6 p.m.
Risky Business will perform oldies music of the ’50s and ’60s this Sunday, and July 18 Savannah Sky will perform country music with the Poppenhusen Line Dancers and instructors Ellen and Ira Lengel. On July 25 Phil Costa and The Something Special Orchestra will perform the sounds of the Big Bands.
Congratulations to Joe Governale of Whitestone on earning master’s degrees in protection management and security management and terrorism.
The graduating class of Holy Trinity Parish School took place and 19 graduates garnered 12 full- and part-time scholarships. Principal Mrs. Menna and the teaching staff helped mold the graduates with the cooperation of parents.
The competing design proposals for the Korean War Veterans Monument to be built in Kissena Park will be available for public viewing at the Queens Museum of Art this month. This monument will honor the sacrifices of the men and women who fought to defend freedom and democracy in the Korean War.
Cooperation among Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the borough president’s office, council members and the Department of City Planning has resulted in the rezoning of 10 neighborhoods, Bayside, College Point, Whitestone and East Flushing in addition to other areas across the county.
Edward Joseph McGovern will be ordained to priesthood. Prior to joining Maryknoll, he was a deputy bureau chief at the Queens County district attorney’s office in the Arson, Economic and Environmental Crimes Bureau. He has also been an assistant attorney general for the New York State Department of Law in the Criminal Prosecutions Bureau and as assistant district attorney. He certainly has a background.
The College Point Old Timers Reunion will be Thursday, Sept. 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Milleridge Cottage Inn in Jericho, N.Y. There will be a full buffet including lunch, coffee and tea, desserts, tax and tip for $29.50. The hosts are Al Vicarelli, Virginia Tkatch and Howie Van Allen. The annual Golden Wedding Anniversary celebration will take place Saturday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. at SS Joachim and Anne Church, 218-26 105th Ave. in Queens Village. Bishop DiMarzio will be the celebrant at Mass. There will only be one celebration for both Brooklyn and Queens.
Congratulations to Kelly Lonergan for her completion of law school studies at St. John’s University. Angela Loccisano received first honors from St. Mary’s High School; and Daniel Sambucci and Christina Ponzini earned second honors. Thomas Lipkin received first honors at Monsignor McClancy High School.
Commendations to Eva Hrastnig-Mieras on all her activities. For the church fund-raiser she played the “biker chick” named Rhonda in a play by Frank Priore. She assists in her mother-in-law’s care and that of her dog, Molly. She has a regular job and is taking care of her five kittens: Fluffy, Middy, Tiggy, Spotty and Pinky. She is also in the scouting program.
Condolences to the family of Dorothy Schreiber. She was a member of Community Board 7 and College Point Security Patrol among other volunteer endeavors. She will be sadly missed and touched many hearts and souls. Service was at St. Paul’s Church with the Rev. Paul Hamilton officiating.
I attended the three kindergarten graduations at PS 129. The children were wearing school T-shirts and announced their names, some quietly and some harder, and each sang his or her special song with gusto. The children received their diplomas for kindergarten and looked forward to first grade. I was invited by the King family and Grandma Lucie to see their Terrence graduate from kindergarten.
Cub Scout Pack 18 had a car wash and everyone was working hard in getting the cars shiny clean. If you are interested in joining as Leader Scouts, call Anne Marie Murphy at 718-358-7371. This is a worthwhile endeavor. Louis Arocho, Ralph Garcia, Joseph Arocho Kelly, Mike Murphy, Stephen Hue and some girls helped with the car wash, as did James and Danny Murphy from St. Fidelis.
Alyssa Malave graduated from PS 129 kindergarten and a surprise party was given by her parents, Hilda and Carlos. Kayla graduated from pre-school 1st class UUCSR.
Megan D’Orazi, a graduate of St. Agnes, received the Americans of Italian Heritage Award for academic excellence and community service. The Americans of Italian Heritage Award also was given to the commanding officer and deputy inspector of the 109th Precinct, Thomas Cea.
Credit card scammers are still at it with a new twist. They claim they are from the fraud department of your credit card company and ask you for information on the back of your card. They already have the information on the front of your card. Immediately hang up and call your credit card company and the Police Department. Do not give any credit card numbers or information to anyone who telephones you. Make sure your credit card is canceled and a new one issued.
Sabina Says…Summer is here and school is out so be careful driving, as children may be in the streets riding toys. Be sure you know where they are and what they are doing! I hope everyone’s Fourth of July was celebrated patriotically and with family.
