Body found in Flushing trash compactor

Police said the man, whose name was not released, was discovered at 8:30 a.m. in the Bennington Apartments at 140-16 34th Ave. A janitor, when taking out the garbage, noticed blood leaking from the compactor and called the police. According to Detective Louis Camacho from the 109th Precinct, the body most likely came down the trash shoot and went through the compactor, landing in a large garbage bag. It is unclear whether or not the body's condition was brought on by the compactor, he said. A spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office said Wednesday a cause of death had not been determined.Bennington Apartment residents, who had to show identification before going in or out of the building, expressed both surprise and concern upon hearing what had happened. “I'm very curious and very scared,” said Elvira Solara, who lives on the sixth floor with her daughter. When she began to learn further details from reporters, the woman waved her hand, “Please, don't say anything more.” An 11-year resident, Solera said there had been no similar incidents in her building she could remember. But Sang Lee, 20, a student at Queensborough Community College, was not surprised to hear that a body had been found in his building. “This block is dangerous,” he said. “I've seen a lot of things, a lot of drug dealers.” He admitted, however, that the news shook him.Reach Zach Patberg by e-mail at news@timesledger.com or call 718-229-0300 Ext. 155.
