Everett comes off the bench and into the spotlight

By Dylan Butler

But on Friday against St. Francis Prep in the 'Battle of the Boulevard,' Everett had a starring role in the Knights 65-41 win at St. Francis Prep. Everett scored a game-high 18 points and Brandon Linton added 12 points for Holy Cross, which saw its bench score 43 points. “I'm very hard on those kids because I tell them all the time, the hardest job on this team is to be a sub because you never know when you're going to play, how long you're going to play, you never know how much rope you have,” said Holy Cross coach Paul Gilvary. “It's a much more pressurized role than the starters because the starters pretty much know how many minutes they're going to get every night.”Everett scored eight straight points for Holy Cross (13-3, 2-3 CHSAA AA-East) during an early 15-2 run that saw the Knights take a commanding 22-10 lead. Most of the 6-foot-3 forward's points came in the paint against a St. Francis Prep team that lacks size and depth. “That's what we practice for,” Everett said. “Every day we just work hard and wait for our opportunity and when we get in we try and make a difference.”St. Francis Prep (10-6, 2-3) couldn't keep up with Holy Cross' speed and switched to a 2-3 zone midway through the second quarter to successfully slow down the Knights' high octane offense. But with leading scorer Mike Marin (10 points) struggling, the Terriers were unable to score after getting defensive stops. “We played man-to-man against everybody all year but we thought they were just too quick for us and off the dribble we would have a lot of trouble,” St. Francis Prep coach Tim Leary said. “In the zone they didn't really score a ton of points but we couldn't score.”The Holy Cross reserves scored 15 points during a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter that was capped by back-to-back buckets by Merlin Bas while Knights starters Gordon McKenzie, Kevin Ogletree, Laurence Jolicoeur, Anthony Clarke and Michael Johnson sat on the bench and cheered.”For those guys to prepare as well as they did and play as hard as they did all week in practice and then come out and perform like they did tonight was great,” Gilvary said. “That's why I never put the other guys back in.”Christ the King 71, Molloy 52.
