New street names honoring a young Queens soldier killed in action and a beloved educator were unanimously approved by CB7 last week.
PFC James E. Prevete, 22, a lifetime resident of Whitestone, was killed last October while serving in Habbaniya, Iraq with the 506 Infantry Battalion. He attended Holy Trinity elementary school and later played football for St. Francis Preparatory High School, where he graduated in June 2000.
Prevete was remembered by his family and friends as a man who found his true calling serving in the U.S. Army.
CB7 designated the street of his family’s residence at 5th Avenue between 147th and 149th streets in Whitestone as “PFC James Prevete Avenue” to commemorate his sacrifice.
Similarly recognized were the distinguished and selfless educational services of Brother John W. Donoghue, the founding principal of Holy Cross High School, the first Catholic boys high school in Queens.
Currently celebrating its 50th Anniversary, Holy Cross has already graduated 15,000 young men from its Francis Lewis Boulevard campus.
When his term as principal was completed, Brother John remained true to his professional calling and returned to the classroom until he retired.
CB7 designated the school block on 170th Street between 29th Avenue and Francis Lewis Boulevard as “Brother John W. Donoghue, CSC Way.”
The recommendations have been forwarded to the City Council for action at its April 14 meeting.
