Harried Bell Blvd. merchants and shoppers received good holiday shopping news from the City Transportation Department [DOT].
The two-month traffic obstacle course on Bell Boulevard between 40th and 41st Avenues is being temporarily postponed this Thursday, because of the scheduled 46-day city-wide ban on holiday street work.
The busy, block-long vehicle and pedestrian barrier currently houses city Environmental Protection [DEP] emergency sewer repairmen, working alongside Con Edison electrical workers who are installing electrical vaults to ensure reliable service. DEP crew permits allow road work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Some sidewalks are also being repaved.
The twin project’s heavy construction equipment currently straddles Bell Boulevard’s busy roadway and crowded sidewalks, just two blocks from busy Northern Blvd. The twin projects are also surrounded by traffic generated by the LIRR’s Bayside train station, a municipal parking lot, a nearby fire house, as well as shoppers and visitors to Bell Blvd.
The blockade will re-start January 2nd.
