KIDSCLASSICS II Continues At Colden Center

KIDSCLASSICS II, the interactive series designed to stimulate youngsters’ interest in music offers “Follow the Beat” on February 12th at 3 pm, in the intimate and acoustically perfect setting of the LeFrak Concert Hall. This concert, the second in the popular series co-presented with Goliard Concerts, is set to include Afro-Cuban ceremonial music, South Indian percussion music, rumba, clapping music, and more.
In “Follow the Beat,” host Jim Blanton and the Queens College Percussion Ensemble will illustrate how a variety of instruments make different sounds when struck, shaken or scraped. Children will have great fun when they learn how to keep the beat and produce rhythms by clapping their hands, snapping their fingers, or chanting in “rap style.”
Come early, so the youngsters can create instruments of their own in the Concert Hall’s sunny atrium with guidance from Skip LaPlante, master builder and co-founder of Music for Homemade Instruments. After the performance, they can even meet the artists! As a take-home bonus, young patrons receive the Classic Talk Program Guide filled with games, puzzles and activities that enhance and reinforce their concert experience. Join the Chorale, and Meet the Orchestra round out the series, which has been funded by the Kupferberg Foundation and, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
